Anyone know about Sigma firearms??

Just heard the police here are getting rid of their S&W .357 revolvers in favour of "Sigma" 9-mm semi-autos.

Can anyone give me a (brief) rundown on Sigma, please?

Where are they made? What are they like? and so on.

Ta in advance.

Bruce

I own a couple of sigma's. These are S&W's answer to the glock. The early ones (both 9mm and 40mm) can be had in high-cap: 17rds for the 9mm and 15 for the 40mm (plus one in the pipe). Although many glock owners will argue, I like the sigma every bit as much as the glock, and at a fraction of the price too. I also like the trigger better on the sigma; the hinged trigger safety is more comfortable for me to shoot than the safety bar sticking through the middle of the glock trigger. Unfortunately, they're made by the company who sold their soul for 30 pieces of silver and a promise, so buy used, not new. ***please no flames from the glock crowd, I just prefer the feel of the sigma.

Also, if the local police are going to a sigma, it's probably the 357 sig not a 9mm.

CJViper, no flame here, but I've owned Sigmas (Sigmae?) and Glocks, and there's no comparison. The Sigma suuuuucked, trigger was nasty, kick was intolerable (and I'm not what you'd call recoil sensitive).

BTW, this really belongs in Handguns. Hang on, here we go...

Spineless & Weak had to pay some patent infrigement money to Glock, too, as I understand.

Now why would anyone think that because a PD transitions to a semi-auto that they wouldn't go to 9mm? A LOT of agencies use the 9mm; nothing wrong with it.

Re the Smegma, er Sigma, I have witnessed many of them on ranges and most of the ones I've seen would hardly be called "reliable". Not even comparable to the Glock imo, except in design similarities.

Bruce,
The Sigma is a cheap Glock clone made by Smith and Wesson.
My concern is that your police departments have signed on to the preferential treatment agreement that came about as a result of S&W's "agreement" with our corrupt Clinton administration. If your cities award contracts by the competitive bidding process, you MUST inquire if there were indeed any other bids made for the new firearms contract. There have been cases over here where corrupt anti-gun officials have tried to skirt the bidding process, and just "give" the contract to S&W. Be on the lookout for this!!!!! It is then up to the you to raise enough HE!! to stop this in it's tracks.
BE VIGILANT!!!!!!

Anyone who has followed my posts on this board can tell you that I really like S&W pistols -- I own more of them then all other guns combined. However, even I can't say anything positive about their Sigma line.

My one experience with a Sigma was a friend who had one. Every time it ejected a round, the spent casing hit him in the head. Needless to say, I don't own one nor do I recommend you buy one.

Do a search here. You'll find just as many "For's" as "Against's" but those opinions will be untainted by the sell out deal feelings.
I own a 9 and a 40 version. Never had any problems in over 10,000 rounds each.

I used to have a Sigma 40V. I fired well over 3000rds through it with no problems whatsoever and NO jams at all. The trigger pull was a bit heavier than my friend`s Glocks but not as mushy. It was no target pistol but it wasn`t that bad either and I did very well with it in rapid fire drills. If you take a SIgma and a Glock apart side by side you`ll see that mant of the Sigmas internals are actually beefier than the Glocks althought they`re obviously copies. The trigger itself was much more comfortable to me and the grip shape was superb. Recoil was no worse or better than a comparable Glock nor should it be. It bothered me that I had to use "Klinton" mags or pay $80 for hi caps and I really wanted something that could double as an fairly accurate target gun *and* a defensive piece so I sold it and bought a P-97. It was a good choice but I still miss the feel of the Sigma. I think it`s a decent gun that just doesn`t get the fitting and quality control it needs to be really great. If you get a good one, great! If not,DOH! Marcus

Had 2 of the sigmas.I wouldn't give you a dime for one of them.Didn't fuction well, trigger pull crappy and inaccurate. My 2 cents worth.

Recently field stripped a Sigma and my Glock-17 and laid them side-by-side.

The similarities are amazing!

Although a bit longer, my glock barrel actually fit in the Sigma.

No wonder Glock has a pending suit against S&W... The Sigma is a clone modified just enough to keep parts from interchanging.

Thanks for all your help, people.

Learning that it's a Glock clone makes sense now. The east coast police forces are also rearming; most of them are purchasing "real" Glocks -- I think about $1200 each (AUD).

Just like our cheapskate State police to try to find a cheaper alternative to play with the big boys.

Incidentally, this rearming process has been underway for about 12 months here; long before the trouble with S&W in the USA.

Cheers
