Anyone hunt moose in nome

I'd recommend a hard cast gas-checked flat nose bullet of around 400 grains.
I have seen excellent results with them from 45-70s on moose, buffalo, black bears and elk. Fired at 1400 to 1700 FPS (depending on what shoots best in your gun) such bullet exit the game, leave larger holes then you would think, and just work wonderfully. The LBT style is about the best of the bunch, but with any flat nose 45-70 of that weight and speed you have "room to spare" so I would not be overly concerned with the smallest details. They all work well on large animals.

However, apparently you cannot drive to Nome, Alaska, anyway. No roads go there.

I went out to the range my 45-70 is right on at 100 and i was able to consistently hit the target at 200 calulating the hold over. I never take any long shots and usually let anything pass so i will go with the 45-70 . Any thing longer i will have to try my calling. I always appreciate the great advice you guys give me. I worked up to near max on penns 405 hardcast. I am around 1730 fps and with the gel pads the old shoulder is doing fine. Unlike Buffalo Bore magnum at 2002 fps ouch

Issue is the ballistics. A 405 grain SP sighted in at 100 yards will drop 8.5" at 150 and 24" at 200. And the remaining energy at 200 is about 1000 ft-lbs. Just enough. Depends on what brand too though.

I spent a lot of time in the Nome area. I was CO of a NG Native Company out of the Nome BN.
As to shooting moose, my opinion is go with the 'o6, with good quality 180 gr bullets. They are more then capable.
As to Nome area. Not a lot of roads, I dont know if you're a foot or planning on hiring someone to fly you out.
The Seward Penn. has some mountains but mostly rolling brush covered hills. Best bet would be glassing the tree (brush) line another river/creeks until you spot one, then figure out a stalk.
There is a lot of country out there, to be honest I've done most of my traveling on skis.
I havent been there in a long time. Back then you had to be careful hunting on native lands.
I dont know where exactly your suppose to hunt, but If I was to hunt there, I'd hire a 4 wheeler and hunt the Taylor road. Then if time permitted, take a boat to Brevic Mission
then hunt the wooded are east of there.
Its been 30 years. When I lived up there I went out with the natives but I really didnt hunt my self.
