I may have a chance to buy one at a good price and wondered if anyone has owned one. They are roughly an inch shorter in lenght and are made in South America? If someone has had one I'd appreciate your opinion.

I had one for awhile. Very reliable. The accuracy on mine was so so. They use regular hipower mags so hicaps are available. They use an oddball recoil spring set up, a spring within a spring. If you try and replace them you will probably have to do some improvising, wolff gun springs doesn't stock them and I don't know who would. Lastly mine developed a hairline crack in the slide near the ejection port. For more info try here http://www.fnhipower.com/modules.php?name=Forum Mark

I don't believe that the Detective Model is a Browning at all, nor is it even made in Belgium. It is an FM made in Argentina. Do not think that you are getting a Belgian Browning or FN when you buy an FM. The difference in price is about 100% between an FM when going to an FN.

I've been a HP fan for years but always longed for a compact version. The recent conversions that Cylinder & Slide put together didn't sound too encouraging but now my hopes are revived. Anybody got any idea how difficult it would be to shorten the grip frame by about 3/4"? I yearn for an "officer's model" HP.

Slabside now you've really got my attention! I looked at the FN website but didn't see anything about a compact HP. Can you steer us to a source for more info about a compact HP?

ammo dave:

Saw the new FN compact at a gun show a few months back. FN is producing w/ fixed sights and nightsights. In my discussion w/ the vendor, he says that they are being released in very small numbers at the present. The new compacts were in the boxes w/ 2 mags and manuals. Models w/ nightsights are running about $50 more.

Like railroader said, do some searches on www.fnhipower.com . Thats the best place for more info.

Best,
Slabside

Thanks everyone!

Jeff, I knew it was from Argentina, the dealer is suppose to have some in this month. They are definately different in a lot of ways, but I want one that is a little more compact, I don't remember if the Cuffler's review said the mag lock out was take off or not. I really do want to check out the one Slabside is talking about. Sounds interesting!

The www.jldenter.com lists the detective as a pistol, and as a slide you can add to a regular HP (I guess). Not sure if the FM and FN BHPs are 100% compatible though. For $200 it might be an interesting experiment. Later.
