Anyone heard of the Police Corps?

I was flipping through the newspaper (ok, someone else found it) and I saw an article about the first class being underway for the Georgia Police Corp. (June 18 2000 AJC section D4)

It's a 20 week live-in academy that's conditional upon a 4 year commitment on YOUR part to a local police agency of your choice.

They'll pay for college even if you're a Senior. They'll even reimburse you for the years already taken. I'm a senior CJ major, and saw this and it looks like it's right up my alley.

Has anyone at TFL ever participated in the Police Corps or heard of any good/bad experiences about it? Georgia is supposed to be the 23 state to offer such a program, so I'm SURE someone else has heard of it. It certainly looks intriguing, and is possibly going to be offered at several other academies thoughout the state if this new one in Forsyth is successful. http://www.ganet.org/gpstc/
Thanx for your help,
Ben

Ben, I'm currently in the application process for the Police Corps in my state. It is a good program. Here in Utah it lasts for 5 months, 12 hours a day, vs. 3 months, 8 hours a day for regular POST. You live there in a barracks, and go home on week ends. The grads are in high demand by local departments because they have received more training, and you have to have a college degree to attend. The training is supposed to be excellent and demanding, by the end of the five months you are supposed to be running seven miles a day.

Every state is different. I would recommend that you give yours a call and ask for their recruiter, they will be glad to answer all your questions.

The money is federal grant money, you receive half of the reimbursement for college the day you get out of the Corps, you get the second half a year latter. There is also a living stipend given to you every week. The amounts depend on your state. Also once you are hired, the department that hires you receives money from the gov to help pay your salary.

I'm still testing, and won't know if I've made it in for another month or two. If you have any specific questions, e-mail me. But I would recommend that you just give them a call.

ckurts,

I think you may be surprised at how many LEO's are pro-RKBA. If I remember correctly, there's NEVER been an on-duty cop shot by a citizen with a permit to carry a gun.

They should enjoy our company ;) Maybe they know they're safe with us.

I am currently attending the Florida Police corps's 1st class. We run for 24 weeks, from 5:45 am to 8 or 10 pm monday through friday and 5:45 to noon on saturdays. It is extremely challenging in both mental and physical capacities. We do roughly 3 times as many hours of training as the Basic Law Enforcement classes in this state. They will repay for your college but you need to document the money. I dont know how it works for people currently enrolled.
It has been one of the best experiences of my life. We are about half way through,(we graduate in september). We are currently training at FCCJ in Jacksonville. The nicest thing about this program in my opinion is that the agencies hire you before the academy.
From what I have seen it seems to be a pretty good deal if you dont mind a long "Boot Camp".

Ben-
Bud, I probably wouldn't be surprised, I'm more surprised when they're not. I don't want to see this turn into another you-know-what thread, just wanted to let you know that even if almost all LEOs are pro-RKBA, pro-2A, and pro-CHL, we can always use more.

Again, best of luck to you and Correia in your endeavors. Sounds like a tough but worthwhile program.

sorry... I didn't mean to give the impression that I knew anything. Most of my friends think otherwise ;) Thanx for the good wishes though. Sounds like the other two need it more than me. I wish all of you the best, and keep up the good work. Right now, it's just something I'm considering.

Take care & be safe,
Ben
