Anyone have input on the USP9?

I have been test driving several makers in search of my first gun.

Unfortunately, I have been unable to actually shoot a HK USP 9 or Compact USP9.

I have to thank the folks who urged me to check out the Walther P99. It was quite impressive.

For you sig lovers I have to say I didn't think I would like it as much as I did !

I wish I could afford them all right now.
:D

If I could have found hi-caps for the P99 in .40, I'd have bought one of them instead of getting another USP. I rented a P99, and it was by far the sweetest feeling polymer gun I ever touched. But my HK ain't bad, and you can find hi-caps for around $60 right now... and since the 10 rounders cost $40, that's not too much $$$ for an extra 5 rounds.

As you're about to hear a LOT though, buy what feels best to you. ;)

Good luck.

Bought mine used for around $500. Couldn't be happier! Eats anything, infinitely more accurate than I am...

My favorite handgun...until I can get a hold of a P7!!!

I have a USP9c. Aside from the lack of standard capacity magazines, I have no complaints... okay, the DA trigger is gritty and numb, but I almost never use it. Accuracy is excellent.

A full-sized USP9 is MUCH easier to find standard cap mags for, but it's bigger.

I shot a USP9 full-size only once, and I only put two mags through it. My impressions? It was accurate, but the grips tore my hands up (they were really raw after shooting the pistol; I've never had that problem even after a hard day's shooting with any of my other guns), and I know that USP's have a reputation for reliability, but this one jammed within 13 rounds for me. Plus, the mag release is different (down instead of in). In short, I wasn't impressed.

Maybe if I had won the lotto and had money to blow, I'd get one, but the USP is nowhere near the top of my list of guns to get.

Just my $.02

I love my USP9. It impresses me every time I shoot it. The only problem has been a broken flat spring at about 6,500 rounds. It cost $3.00 to replace, and its failure did not prevent the gun from firing. (The gun fired DAO instead of DA/SA.) While the stipling on the grip seems sharp (I was worried about this before I fired one), it has never bothered me.

I used to own a Walther P99. Between the two, I prefer the USP. The Walther always shot low for me, while the USP shoots to point of aim. I also had a major failure with the Walther: the barrel lug broke at about 5,000 rounds.

For more information on the USP, try HKPro.

USP9? Excellent handgun...no, make that incredible.

Accurate, trigger took 500 rounds to smooth out. My trigger is so much better than my Glock 21 was...better engineered than Glock or SIG. Everything is just perfect. The grip is perfect, my hands don't slip after an hour of shooting and sweaty palms, like Glock does. Don't listen to anyone about the grips being overly aggresive, see for yourself. Anyone rubbing their hands raw shooting a USP is either gripping way too hard, or should see their dermatologist about a possible skin problem ;)

The way it sounds, the way it feels, from the safety lever to the mag release to inserting a mag and racking the slide - it's all "just right". Worth every penny, IMO. I won't buy a Glock again.

Get a Hogue hand-all for about $10. It definitely is a must if you have sensitive palms. Fits just right and improves the handle, albeit the grip gets a bit fatter.

Best,

The left side of the grip used to rub my hip raw when I carried, so I used a file to take the points off. It's fine now. You could easily do the same to all sides of the gun if the grip bothers you, but take off a little bit each time and test it out. If you take off too much, you'll lose your grip. I have no comfort problems when shooting and I go through 200 rounds each week.

Mikul has got it right. We need to get away from the term "High Capacity" when talking about standard capacity magazines. The USP was designed to hold more than 10 rounds, hence a standard capacity magazine. A post ban magazine should be called what it is, "low capacity".

I've heard people complain about the grips being too rough, but I've never noticed the problem with my USPs. In fact, the only time I think about it is when someone on this board brings it up. Then I sit here and think. . . hmmmm. . . funny, mine doesn't do that to me. Then I think, I'll have to remember next time I go to the range and see if I notice that they bother me while shooting. By the time I get to the range I've totally forgotten about it again (having too much fun shooting my H&Ks to remember :D). Then, someone brings it up on this board again. . .

I wouldn't let it bother you. If they do I've heard of several like Mikul who have sanded or filed the points of the checkering down a little.

I love the magazine release on the H&K and the P99. There are very few guns that I can reach the release on without adjusting my hold on the grip (can on my Beretta Elite II -extended mag release, can on CZs without the darn thumbrest grips, CAN'T on most other large framed guns). I consider my hands to be pretty big too.

With the H&K and P99 style release, I just use my trigger finger on the right side of the gun. Lately I've gotten even faster using my thumb and my finger (on opposite sides). This requires me to reposition, but I can get into action much faster afterwards than if I used the conventional thumb release on a standard style release. In short, I like it.

Yeah, every time that I mention that my hands went raw shooting 30 rounds from a USP, and people say I have problems. Fact is, my hands have never felt as raw even after a day spent firing over 1000 rounds of ammunition from various other weapons, as I felt on those 30 rounds from the USP.

As far as filing down the checkering, etc, the USP I shot was a range gun and I'm sure the range would have problems with me taking a file to their pistol.

In any case, again, I only shot two mags through the USP, it jammed on me, and left my hands feeling like they were swollen and raw. That's my impression of it. If other owners have shot thousands of rounds through theirs without a problem and love their pistol to death, that's fine. My opinion is that the USP isn't for me.
