Does anyone have any experience with the H&K SP89? I am especially interested in the difference between it and the MP5. I know that there is a large price difference. I have shot my departments MP5 suppressed and standard versions. They are super sweet.

you may know .. but ill fill ya in anyway ..
MP5 = military police (select fire)
sp89= sivilian pistol (semi auto )
thats the only real difference ..
not a whole lot more .. anyway .. i want one .. have wanted one for 5 years .. cant afford one ... :(

They are nice, but if its not for collecting.....I don't see the point, a Like new SP89 is going to run you $2500-$2800, with new ones in the $3000-$3500 range. Plus, they don't look half as cool as an MP5K...some Terry Dyer and Vollmer conversion guns out there (based off SP89)- but are super expensive.

If you want an assault type pistol without costing a fortune (I'm not comparing them too an SP89)...but an Uzi 9mm pistol is lots of fun and reliable, the Steyr SPP is nice also...both shouldn't cost anymore than a $1000, SPP might run slightly more.

But if $ isn't a concern, then more power to you. good luck.

An SP-89 is fun to play with for a while, but if you're not planning on converting it into a PDW it's just an over-priced, oversized 9mm pistol.

I want one too!:D

There are quite a few differences between the SP-89 and the standard MP-5. The SP-89 is closer to the MP-5k than anything else.

The gripframe on a MP-5 attaches to the receiver in a manner that is similar to its larger brethern (G3/HK33/etc). That is, push-pin (automatics) or ledge (semiautos) at the front and a rattail at the rear that is sandwiched between the buttstock and receiver.

The MP-5k/SP-89 uses a push-pin that goes through a hole in the rear of the gripframe and the gripframe has no rattail. There is a plug that fits into the rear of the receiver that is held in place by a push-pin at the top and bottom.

The cocking tube is significantly shorter on the MP-5k/SP-89. This means that the forearm is super-short and not interchangeable with the full-size MP-5, though the MP-5 can use the "k" version's forearm by the use of an adaptor.

I believe the locking piece has a specific configuration to account for the short barrel.

:( Well, I shot one at a range in 1992, and passed on it. Yes, it just seemed to be an oversized 9mm pistol. At the time, I thought, "if it's not full-auto, what's the point?". It was pretty accurate for it's size, on an indoor range out to 15 yds or so.

I could have bought one for $999 in 1992. I opted for a "green-label" Colt AR-15 9mm carbine. Got it for only $749! It has a nice 16" barrel, good sights, and shoots like a rifle. I passed on the HK SP89.

Now, of course, I kick myself for not buying one then when I could get one for only $999! But, that's not the only thing I regret not buying! At least I have the Colt 9mm!

Regards,
James

It's okay; you could be me, and be kicking yourself for selling your SP89 for around $1000... D'OH! :o

(...and I made a pretty hefty profit at that price, too. I was sooo proud of myself... :o :( :o )
