Being a CCW holder in AL I'm thinking about applying for CT permit since we are getting a house there. Anyone have one? It states that CT require NRA safety course or the like to get a permit, but it also states that If you have a permit from another state you will be grant an out of state permit...I'm so confused...

DPS of CT said that I need to call 860-685-8494 to have an application mailed out to me...I'm just too shy to ask them those questions on the phone :D

Last I knew, that's right. If you have an out-of-state permit, they'll consider the requirements met. I'd suggest going the whole route and getting a CT permit rather than a "out-of-state" permit if you can put up with the process.

If you go the regular permit route, you'll still have to initially apply in the town/city you are going to reside in. By the way, there are a few towns/cities that are decidedly anti-gun around these parts, so they may tell you it doesn't make any difference if you have a permit from another state and want you to go through the safety course.

Once you jump through the hoops that your town/city require and get your town permit, you apply for the state permit. It can be a drawn-out process, but it is doable. If your town/city refuses to issue you one, you can jump right to the state and, barring any legal reason for not being issued one, they will issue you a state permit.

Obviously, the big reasons for denial are a criminal record which has certain convictions, domestic violence charges, and/or felon status.

Which town/city are you headed for? I can check for you and see how "nice" they are.

we are thinking about buying a house in West hartford... I'm hoping to get an out of state permit first and then get the residents permit after I finally settle down there (which won't be for a year or so). Having the non-resident's permit I can carry as soon as I move there (since AL permit doesn't work in CT).

a bit off topic but how are the ammo prices in CT? any decent out door ranges near hartford?

Lionken07- West Hartford isn't too bad. They tend to run the process as it should be run. No "special" requirements.

That's great to hear because I'm planning to apply in the next

week for my NR CT permit. I thought you had to have the NRA class and also include any other permits you have.... doesn't matter because I have both. Got the paper work yesterday but haven't opened it up yet.

I too think the original posters best bet is to get a NR permit and then appy for the resident when he has a place there.

But there can't be an easier new england state than New Hampshire... if you don't include the lone light of freedom: Vermont.
