Anyone had a handgun coated in Black Teflon?

I am thinking about having my Sig P226 coated in Black Teflon. I have heard that this does a great job of protecting the gun from rust. The only negative thing I have heard is that it makes the gun slick. Is this a significant problem... And what are your experiences with Teflon coating. Thanks, Larz

I've got a couple of guns coated with variations of the Teflon finishes and have no complaints at all. I'm not sure why "slick" would be bad, since the grips aren't coated and the teflon does a lot to smmoth the draw from a holster.

My daily carry gun has Roguard on the slide and has absolutely no signs of wear aftr 3 years.

Most of my carry guns ( colt 1911's) have teflon gripframes. After I beveled the magazine wells, dehorned the frame, and added a beavetail grip safety I Tefloned the frames with Brownell's Moly Cote Teflon. My Defender was done only about 6 mths. ago, but my L.W. Commander was done about 4 yrs ago. It shows wear on the frame rails ( visible only with the slide back) but it dosen't have one scratch on the outside! I am very happy with this product because this gun has been carried quite a lot and has about 2000 rds. through it. Not bad for $25 worth of teflon and materials!

I've got an original model Colt Trooper that has been customized PPC style, with the baked on black teflon finish.

It was done back around 1991 and held up very well until about a year ago. It's starting to look a little ratty now. Finish has worn through in all the usual high spots. The cylinder area has suffered from over agressive use of those lead remover cloths. In fact, now that I think about it, most of the wear is from my cleaning style.

Good Luck...

I've had a Sig P220 finished in Walt Birdsong's Black-T. I chose the tu-tone variation, OD green frame and black slide - very nice! The finish held up very well. Showed some wear across the barrel hood and both corners of the front of the slide.

The slickness you've heard of is eith Robar's NP3 or Roguard, not sure which one. With Black-T, you can forget about rust - submarine propellars coated with it have 40,000 hrs + with no rust.

The most important thing I learned from talking to Walter is:
Keep your holster clean! The teflon finish will last much longer with this simple maintenance.
