Hi Everyone,

Has anyone got a load for 357 Mag using Red Dot and a cast 148Grn RN ??

Just can't seem to find any loads just have a vague recollection of using Red Dot in 357 mag loads...

Your help & guidance would be greatly appreciated.

basically what you will be doing is loading 38 special type loads in the longer 357 magnum case. I use data based on 38 special Red Dot loads .

With the 148 to 158 grain cast bullet, WC-SWC or RN , in 357 cases,
4.5 grains of Red Dot will give you a nice general purpose load , approaching 38 special +P .

For a light powder puff load target load try 2.8 grains Red Dot.
2.8 is one of my favorite loads.

4 grains of Red Dot is .5 over max for a cast 148 grain .38 Special. Alliant's site shows 3 grains is Max. Don't think it'll hurt anything though.
Handloads.com shows 4.1 to 4.6 of Red Dot for .357 at 1,300 fps. Also an Alliant provided load. And it gets worse because they also provided 2.4 to 2.7 for a 148 at 775 fps.

Old Alliant/Hercules Data

See the old Hercules powder data here. They include many Red Dot, Green Dot, Herco, etc., loads which are still safe, (and Alliant will email you on request) that are not "featured" in Alliants newer line-up.

I really think you meant 158 gr LRN. The 148 bulets are usually wad cutters (not rounded), where as 158 round nose were once extremely common. They do list a 158 SWC load.

Lyman moulds #358071 and #358212 are both round nose designs and both have
a weight of 146 grains ....that's really close to 148 !
So it might be possible , but more than likely it's 148 gr. WC or 158 gr. RN.

I like an even 5.0g of Red Dot under 158g SWC. Should work for your 148g RN. Out of a Ruger SA 6 1/2" barrel, that's ~1000fps load (over my chronograph).
