Anyone ever shoot an 8 bore rifle?

I just read an article in the new issue of Double Gun Journal about the 8 bore double rifles. Sounds pretty interesting, 10 drams of 2fg and a 950 grain slug! Anybody here ever fired one of these cannons?

10 gauge slugs, but not an 8.

I have, however, shot a BP 8 gauge shotgun. That was not at all pleasant. 3.5 ounces of shot (1,500 grains), and something like 5 drams of BP.

Guy built the stinking thing from scratch just to say he did it.

doesn't anything bigger than a 10 guage require a class III permit here in the states?
That said, I was looking though a friend's shotgun magazine and there was an article on a fellow in Britian "regularly" making 4 bores and working on designing a 1 bore!

I THINK that's for a firearm firing cartridges, but I'm not certain.

No, come to think of it, I THINK Navy Arms imported a number of double-barrel 8 gauges from Spain some years ago.

I don't think you can use them for hunting...

I'm pretty sure...

...that the ban is only on "military" cartridges in excess of .50 caliber. Examples being 20mm (Solothurn, Lahti), 14.5mm (Russian Heavy Machine Gun Round), etc. Civilian rounds in excess of .50 caliber, like .577 Tyrannosaur, .600 Nitro, and .700 Nitro Express, if you can find them, are legal, as far as I know.

(I didn't know .700 NE was a real cartridge...I referred to it once in a dream, only to find out later that it was real....weird.)

Even bigger brutes existed

.900 NE. Grim rifle.

With non-fixed ammo, anything goes. Muzzle loaders can be made in 4 bore only you cannot legally hunt migratory game birds. Good choice for starlings, flying rats or other vermin.

8 Bore - Ohhh yeah!

A local here shoots his regularly and let shoot it with what he said was a "light" load. Nope, wasn't light at all. Broke my nose on the first shot, stupid thumb wrapped over the stock. Second shot went into the same hole at 50yds, sure is easy to spot them targets!
The gun is a turn of the century under lever with British and India proofs, the cartidges were custom made with the primer pockets cut for shotgun primers. I seem to recall a 1500gn round ball load at 1500fps.
The owner claimed that the gun was actually a 7 Bore as he'd determined this with an old English formula?
The local city councilman owns and shoots the legendary 20mm Solothurn, when fired from it's bipod the bullet actually sucks up the dirt under the bullets path creating a whilwind trail all the way to the 300yd target! $40.00 a shot, whew..Roy

I think one of those things would be a blast, maybe someday when I'm bored I'll have to machine one out, perhaps on a scaled up model 1 action design. I guess one could even go all out and make a 4 guage with both rifled and smooth bored barrels. That would definitely keep the blackbirds out of the corn, say about 8 drams of 2fg and 3-4 ounces of #12's. Anyway, I think the 4 guage is pretty close to 1", say something around .94. There is a pretty interesting article on line about some guy who spent 10 years building a double 4 bore and how he took it into Africa after elephant. If you have the time it's really interesting reading. Thanks for the responses.

I had the distinct honor of touching off a round through the Solothurn a coupla weeks ago. Prone, off the bipod & stock elevation thingy.

Couldn't see a vapor trail as it was night & the target was already on fire. :D

I've had 20 gauge turkey loads kick worse.

Yep. Owners says ~$60 a shot for "store-bought." He reloads & seems around $10 per now. 'Course that after several $100 in custom reloading equipment.
