Anyone ever heard this about Rem. M-1100 ?

I was listening to a local radio talk show and the guest was a female trap/skeet shooting champion, a caller made the remarke that Remington M-1100s are the most dangerous shotguns in the world, claiming thousands have blown up and injured many shooters and killed several. his claim was the the steel was "sulfurized" !! any one here ever hear of this ?? or know anything about M-1100s blowing up ? not being a shotgunner any more, i have never heard this.

anyone know anything :confused:
 
What is it and some people who have these fanatical love and hate for certain guns?!? Blowing up my urANUS. I think he's full of fecal matter of a bovine persuasion.
 
The capitol M in front of any firearms number is the abbreviation of Model. No real significance to what he said either.
 
Consider this:
In this day of predatory, money-hungry lawyers and government and private consumer safety organizations, would it even be possible for an American gun company to sell thousands of exploding guns without headlines in the papers and on the news?

The Remington Model 1100 has been in continuous production since 1963 with millions? sold and in constant use.
If there was a problem, you would have heard about it from more reliable sources than some unknown boob calling in on a talk show.
 
there was a lawsuit

A couple of years ago, I recieved a check from Remington that resulted from a lawsuit settlement in regards to 1100 barrels. I think anyone who had bought an 1100 during a certain timeframe was covered under the settlement. This may be what the guy was referrring too (and exagerating).

BTW, I spent the check on Remington ammo. :)
 
The lawsuit also covered Remington 870 shotgun barrels.

The class action lawsuit was due to the above mentioned predatory lawyers who "hired" plaintiffs so they could extract money from Remington.

It seems that Remington built shotgun barrels so poorly, that if you dropped a 20 gauge shell into the barrel, then fired a 12 gauge Magnum shell, the barrel would actually burst.

In order to prevent years of litigation, Remington payed the extortion charges, and sent those Remington barrel owners who were the lawyers said were part of the suit a check for $25.00.

Of course the lawyers collected millions in cash, which was the whole point to the affair.
 
i look at it this way. how many hundreds of thousands (maybe a million) of those guns have been sold world wide. among all those how many reload. some times there are reloading accidents. either that or they had so many rounds shot threw them and finally gave up the ghost.
 
The 1100 is the best autoloading shotgun of all time. They have sold over three million of the things. I bought my first skeet gun in 1965 a Remington 1100. Shot the thing competitivly for 20 years, and it's still working today. In the 60's 70's and 80's 1100's dominated the skeet and trap fields. With more disposable income Americans migrated to more expensive single barrel trap and over/under skeet guns. Every serious old time skeet or trap shooter has a couple 1100's hidding in his safe.
 
During the "Clinton years" it was a common practice to try to litigate gun manufacurers out of business. I have shot competitivly for 40 years on the national, regional and local level in skeet, trap and sporting and have never seen or heard of an 1100 barrel blowing up. I wouldn't worry too much.
