Anyone ever have a gun refinished?

I just recently purchased a used SIG228, with 2 full capacity mags, Trijicons, and a factory armorers rebuild kit for it for a STEAL ($425).
The only downside is that the K cote is well worn with a little bare metal showing. It's not extreme, but I have the money to get a nice refinish job. Nothing exotic, just basic black or something.
Please tell me about your favorite finish, who did it, how much $ did it cost, and how long did it take?
Thanks.

Tom

I'm not sure that this exactly answers the question, but FWIW my own preference is to have guns refinished by their manufacturer. Sometimes this costs more than having it done by an outside gunsmith, sometimes it costs less or is even free. Either way, I find that the manufacturer is better, on the whole, at preserving or restoring the original condition of the piece, if this important (it is to me, but not necessarily to someone else). Also, with the manufacturer, I never have to be concerned that the refinisher will be unfamiliar with the gun and cause some peripheral problem.

IOW, I guess that if it were my P228, my first call about refinishing would be to SIG's customer service department.

HTH. :)

I had Colt refinish a SAA in .38 spl that oddly had NO wear....just ALL finish gone. No blurred letters, no nicks, nuttin. It came back looking absolutely new.
But the grouping was GONE. Have no idea how. It used to fire ragged holes and went to 6" grouping. Sold it. No evidence of any change from before to after except what shot like a champ was gone.

Lavan,
It could be there was blueing inside the barrel, as frequently happens when the gun is reblued. You sometimes have to shoot them till that is gone before they settle down.

I JUST GOT MY H&K COMPACT BACK FROM ACCURATE PLATING IN FLA. I HAD THE SLIDE, BARREL, SLIDE RELEASE AND TWO MAGS HARD CHROMED FOR AROUND $100. IT TOOK ABOUT A MONTH AND LOOKS GOOD AND THAT HARD CHROME IS ONE TUFF FINISH.

I had the slide on my KelTec P-11 nickel finished by Jack Fuselier. He did a great job, and I may send my P-32 slide also. He has special pricing for KTOG members, and turn around was about a week. That depends on how busy he is.

And if you hear from my Louise, won't you tell her I love her so?

AP&W did a Witness (hardchrome) for me; Robar has my 1911 for NP3.

IMO, these are the only finishes (although I've heard Metalife is excellent).

Hard chroming is the only way to go. My 1984 HK P7 PSP looks brand new with hard chroming by MetaLife in Penn.

Find the one closest to you and have them do the work - all have been complimented for their excellent work.

Can anyone describe what hard-chroming looks like?

black, blue, silver,? polished, matte?

when you have a pistol hard-chromed, like a P7 for example, what is the process
it goes through, is it bead blasted first then coated, or is it a chemical process, etc.?

I'm thinking of getting some work done also and have heard all the names of various finishes but don't know what they look like.

AP&W hard chromed a 1911 frame for me.
Walt Birdsong applied his Black-T finish to my Sig P220.
Steve Clark is in the process of refinishing my Kimber Compact Alum with his Ultra Coat finish.

While on the topic of refinishing, I have a blued Kimber Classic that I would like to get matte chromed at some point. Will refinishing "blur" or soften the shallow Kimber logo on the slide? Does bead blasting take off enough material to affect such markings?

How about going stainless? Can one simply have all the blue removed and polish it up, or does stainless take a stronger steel in the first place?

I, also, had my P226 done by in Black-T by Birdsong and Assoc. Good enough for the FBI HRT guns, good enough for me, I thought. I am extremely pleased with this flat-black, self-lubricating, corrosion resistant finish. They do every part of the gun, except the barrel and chamber, and two mags.

Good stuff, Maynard.
