Anyone else in New Jersey waiting this long for prints to come back?

It`s been over two months now. First time around, took only 3 weeks. My new Kimber is just sittin` there without a home.

How long has anyone else waited?

Walt

My wife said either I stop buying shooting stuff or she`ll leave me.

Boy, I`m sure gonna miss her!

Not being from or wanting to go anywhere near NJ, I'm not sure what you mean. I usually get prints back from the photog shop in a couple of days. :D

Nonetheless, I'll move this to the General Discussion forum. Look for it there....

I believe volky is referring to fingerprint check.

Can't help ya volky, I'm in Calif

It is my understanding that New Jersey started a procedure where they do one check at a time instead of running all of the checks at the same time. What I mean by this is that they normally check your prints against the FBI, State Police, etc. (and a few more places). Well, instead of doing all of the checks at the same time, they run one check and wait for the results to come back. Then they run another check and so forth and so on. This greatly increases the time it takes before a purchase permit can be issued. I once waited close to half a year before I had the permit in hand.

Greetings fellow Comrade. Those in the free world can not sympathize with our plight. They do not understand the harsh and unending winter of our discontent. But soon, Comrade Gore will help them to understand. Sorry, just watched Russian Guns on the History Channel, and couldn't help myself.

NJS 2C58-3(f) states that the application should be approved or denied within 30 days of the date of receipt. BUT, recent court rulings state that the "safety of the people" out weights your or my right of having our permits processed in the time allocated by the law. In other words, "they can take as long as they damn well please", and there ain't squat that you can do about it!

Your local PD doesn't require a set of prints for each permit do they? The law states that they only have to print you once, but what the hay, this is New Jersey - when has the law ever applied to those in power?

I live in one of those "good" NJ towns. Permits here usually take 2 weeks, instead of the 3 to 4 month horror stories I hear about, but the last time I applied, they took exactly 30 days (the limit of the law). Guess I've been buying too many guns ;)

If it's any consolation, "I feel your pain". The bad new is, that if we don't all band together come November, next January, our fellow gun owners may also "feel our pain".

This is just one of those things that you have to wait out.

Good luck anyway,
David

Oh, and one little addition for all those waiting for the Republicans to save us. New Jersey has had a Republican Governor, Republican run House, and Republican run Senate, for close to seven years now. Even though Whitman's ‘93 campaign promised an overturn of the Florio Assault Weapon Band, once elected, she not only refused the overturn, but has systematically eroded our rights even further. Last year, she was the first Governor in this nation to ask the Assembly to provide her with a "Smart Gun" bill to sign into law. The Republican run Senate immediately obliged. The House has yet to vote on it. Sorry to break it to you folks, but The Republicans are NOT OUR FRIENDS!

I just gotta say all this talking about waiting time just makes me sick ! What happend to "Shall not be infringed"? We better get are -you know what- together and fast. What do you do to combat the anti-gunners?

NYC is just as bad as NJ. By law handgun permits should be approved in 6 months. I applied for my NYC handgun target permit on June 18, 1999, and I'm still waiting(about 8 1/2 months so far).

I spoke to someone at the licensing division on friday and she said I should receive my confirmation letter this week, which is good since its almost done. However, I had spoken to a person there on Feb 26, and he said I would get it the next week also.

I live in Jersey -- I applied in March and got my permits in October - almost 8 months.

You also have to get a new permit every time you buy a new handgun -- I'm not sure, but I believe that also entails a print check.

Jon,
One set of prints, and one print check for life, is all they are suppose to need. Of course, those Chiefs that are anti-gun, may break the law and require prints each time, in an attempt to discourage you. I really feel for you folks that have to wait months.

Last year I applied for several permits, an address change, and replacement FID, and had everything in 2 weeks. Didn't even ask for new prints, as I had them on file from 25 years ago. A couple months ago, I applied for several more permits, and it took a full month. Monday, my brother applied for permits in the same town as I, and had them in his hand yesterday (3 days). Go figure.

Our best hope is the passage of Assembly Bill 213. This bill would do away with the entire NJ permit and FID system, and replace it with just the NICS point of purchase check. I would encourage ALL NJ GUN OWNERS to write your representatives, and ask them to support this bill. While you're at it, ask them to also support Assembly Bill 1679 and Senate Bill 908. These bills where just reintroduced, and would make NJ a "shall carry" State. If we are willing to work hard, this could become a reality, even in Socialist NJ.

Let me get this straight, you applied for more than one permit at a time and you were approved? I wish that I knew about your town before I packed up and headed south to this brutal heat all year long. I once applied for two permits at once and was immediately rejected. When I applied for one at a time, I was later approved -- of course it took over a year just to buy two guns.

FUD,
Yes, you are correct. I normally apply for 3 at a time. No problems in my town, BUT every surrounding town would have rejected those applications outright. In Jersey, everything depends on the political beliefs of the Police Chief.

Unlike others in this state, I fondly remember my first FID/Pistol Purchase Permit experience. I was only 18, and very nervous about going to the Police Station, let alone asking for a Permit. The Chief was an NRA Life Member, and was visibly pleased with my request. He stopped what he was doing, and walked me through the forms, even calling an Officer in off of patrol to do the fingerprints, so I wouldn't have to make a return trip. If I had been met with the open hostility that typify many NJ permit requests, I may have never gotten my first gun. The new Chief may not be as pro-gun as the old one, but at least he isn't an anti..

I used to live in Holmdel, NJ. My firearm ID card took 3 months (probably b/c of a minor arrest when I was 17). It only took 2 weeks for my friends. Handgun permits take 2 days, and I usually get 2 at a time.

BTW- The police in this town are generally, extremely anti-civil liberty ( they will search your car whenever they get the chance). Apparently the chief must be different
