Anyone Collect Lugers?

Just out of curiosity, are there any Luger collectors or afficianados here? There's one in a local shop. I want to take a look at it (not interested in buying it, but I'd like to see what kind of shape it's in).

What do you look for for fit/finish?

If anyone is interested, it's a 1913 or 1915 luger 9mm, for $1300.00.

I have one my grandfather brought back from WWI or WWII. He was in both, believe it was WWII. I'm not a collector though, just have the one. For more info. on Lugers, see the Luger Forum. Lots of good info. there.

While fit and finish are certainly important, a majority of the value will be in the rarity of the specific gun. It takes a whole book to determine the variation of a Luger, and I'm sure it's not all-inclusive! Without knowing every mark and detail about the gun, I doubt anyone could intelligently price it, though an educated guess is possible.

Ralph Shattuck is the best known American collector, and he wrote a book on them which you might be able to find at a gun show, library, or amazon.com.

Funny you should mention it. I just bought what will probably be my only Luger. I simply decided that I had to have at least one. It's a 1940 WW2-issue Mauser 9mm. I paid $750 for it.

Hi, Nightcrawler,

That is pretty high even for a WWI pistol. Post the other markings and we'll try to find out what it is.

Hi, dsk,

That gun looks OK, except the barrel may have been replaced as it looks like it is newer than the rest of the gun.

I forget the exact length(8" ?), but the artillery model luger from WW1 is rare and valuable. Condition and whether all numbers match are major factors.

Jim,

My barrel is fine. That's just the lighting that makes the barrel look newer than the frame. In person it's a perfect finish match, and the serial numbers match as well.
