I carry the CZ-75b 9mm in a Wild Bill outside the waistband holster. It's a monster!
I only carry the beast in the winter cause, well, you can always wear a trench coat if need be.
And here in Ohio, we have a fair season of winter, about 25 % of the year, jacket or coat wise. I would never consider carrying it short of in a sport jacket in a shoulder holster the rest of the year.
Unnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn Fortunatly, I am in between that and a couple of 22 22/mag sport pistols, when warm months arrive, which I would not carry for personal defense.
However, that is a topic that needs us real men to give serious consideration to. I can shoot the hole out of a hole at 25 feet consistently with a 22 "carry size" pistol. Now saying that, you won't get a lot of attention short of; "He has a gun", from bystanders and the perp will be so adrenaline-d up, that he probably wont feel 10 shots to center of mass. However, "IF" i aimed at head, he or she would drop rather quickly, even if they didn't feel it!
Under the pressure and split second decision of the circumstances of the moment of being agressed by the perp, I'm not sure I would necessarily respond correctly unless, I practiced, practiced, practiced those type shots, and in those near critical style moments. Train the muscles and they will go to the correct position when the situation arises
There is a site posted somewhere here that I spent a day reading that was put together really well by a coroner that also knew hand guns. His take was more were killed with 22's than any other cal weapon.
You can find that discussion here:

I am sure that there are at least as many opinion's on 22's for self defense as there are guns out there. But opinion's aside: Fact remains: when the fit hits the shan, and you aren't real comfortable with a 45 1911 ( or 40 or 9), and that what you got, you will expend all rounds if possible and in the end "Own all the bullets" as to where they went. I see all day every day people that would be much better off having a small caliber
hand gun than a power machine like a 1911 45
. That would also go true down the food chain from 50 cal on down. Nothing said about how accurate you will be, however, you will shoot what you carry on you.
All that said; Big guns do get everyone's attention! And there is a certain level of bragging rights
