Anyone Carry 640-1 in Pocket? Opinons?

I really want to make a 640 work for pocket carry, since I want the changeable front sight and shooting benefit of weight. I should note that I currently carry a Glock 26 in an Uncle Mike's in the pocket of cargo pants and shorts. While a bit blocky, it's 22 0z. unloaded and ?? oz. loaded with 10 +1 9mm is not a bother, since I'm in heavy weight clothing with generous pockets. Obviously not good in lighter dockers, etc.

I have not held the 640-1, but have my Dad's old 36 snubbie in steel, and it seems to weigh about the same as the G26.

I guess I'm thinking at 23 oz. carrying 5 +Ps, I'll still be lighter than the Glock's specs of about 22 oz. unloaded + weight of 11 rounds.

Anyone carry the 640, at least sometime?

Thanks,

Depends on the pockets...they need to be pretty deep to hide the backstrap, but I don't find the weight or bulk particularly bad.

The 642 is alot more tempting for carry, but undoubtedly looses some controlability for f/u shots.

Don Hume makes an inexpensive pocket holster for the 640/642.

OldFart, thanks for the post. And I particularly like your use of phrases with double meanings ("f/u shots")...he he.

According to the S&W site, the 36LS in carbon steel weighs 20 oz. It sure looks alot like my Dad's 1960s 36. I'm hoping that gives me a good comparison. I've dropped the 36 in my pocket, and it seems lighter than my Glock.

Thanks,

Found it too heavy and went for a 642 with +Ps. Not that charming to shoot but it's a close up, SHTF gun and my hand hurting later is ok.

I recall some gun writer also saying he found the 640 too heavy and went for the 442 (carbon steel version).

I had a 640 for a long time. In my opinion it was too heavy (but not too big) for regular extended pocket carry. (Though great to drop in a pocket for a quick trip to the store.)

However, if you are comforatbly carrying a G26 all day in your pocket, the 640 is probably a great choice. The weight is a little lighter but the shape compared to your Glock will definitely be a treat for you.

I had a 940, a 640 in 9mm, for a while and found it to be heavy and picked up a 642 and had a 940 cylinder installed. This setup is a whole lot better than a 640 because of the lighter weight and power, at least over the 38 version of the 640.

I have been firing a 642 and found that the factory "boot" grips not only tear up my hand, but don't allow enough grip on the gun. I replaced them with the plain wood grips that S&W used to use (no spacer), and now find that I can control the gun better, plus get a tighter grip to keep down the blow of the recoil. I don't say it would work for everyone, but that is what I will go with. (I also think the wood grip looks better, but that is of no real importance.)

I've carried my 640 ( J mag frame) in a jacket pocket on many occasions. It's under 26 oz fully loaded and has a great feel to it. +P's are perfect and pain free. having said that, I usually carry a older mod 38 if I'm jacketless. It's smaller and lighter and a more comfortable carry in hot weather.

I used to carry a 640 in my pocket but sold it and bought a 642 due to lighter weight of the 642 and the fact I carried .38 SPL rds in the 640 anyway.tom.

I carried my 640 for quite a while but eventually found it to be too heavy (I think it weighs around 22 ozs., empty) and went to a 642. The 640 isn't too heavy for my wife's handbag or the glovebox and there's no denying it's easier to shoot than the 642. I like having both ef them. :)

Got it from S&W.

Brian,

Can you elaborate? Did you just call them and order it or was there a special circumstance?

I assume it also has to be fitted? Not a drop-in component?

Thanks.
