Anybody Want a Cheap Shoot and See Target Alternative????

So I do some air gunning from time to time and can go through some shoot and see/dirty bird/visi shot etc. type targets and those things really are not cheap. So I started experimenting with stuff I had around that house and found something that worked great for my airgun needs. Easily showed point of impact at distance. So I figured I would try it with real powder burner calibers at longer ranges and it worked just about as well.

It is simple HVAC foil tape. Such as the following.

http://www.homedepot.com/p/Nashua-T...m-Foil-Tape-3220020500/100030120#.UeBiw5WEzzI

The trick to it is it's highly reflective and slightly rigid. So on impact the hole it creates both shows up very black but also reflect light back differently then before since it deforms slightly around impact point. I would say it works damn near as well as the dedicated high visibility splat type targets and is damn cheap. Obviously if you need a 100 yard sight in type target you probably want to buy the Shoot and See type targets since it might be a bit of a pain to strip out a larger type target with the tape, but for shooting smaller targets or even covering shoot and see type holes this stuff rocks.

Just thought I would give folks a heads up. I'm not saying it will work for you but for 7-8 bucks for something you could always just use as tape if need be its worth a try.

Dang! That's a great idea. I think it will also help me at the local indoor range where the lighting at 25 yards is so dim that I have trouble seeing the target.

Do you use a magic marker, stencil, or anything to mark out a bullseye?

Thanks again,
Andrew

Nope I just cut the tape to what I need or do a cross of tape strips or something to that effect. No markets or anything.

I have done everything from small small diamonds to simple squares of various sizes to crosses or larger boxes using strips. I just tape it to whatever (standard target, paper, pie plate etc.)

Foil tape is really a sleeper tool ;) it sticks to things duct tape just won't. That said...the good stuff is expensive; depending on how many targets you make from a single roll you might not be all that far ahead.

It makes me wonder if a little spray adhesive on a piece of paper and then pressing some aluminum foil over it would be an even cheaper alternative that did the same thing. I have what I need to try both methods. I think I'll give it a try next time I can get out to shoot.

[And yes, I too think foil tape is great. I recently used it to make a pocket survival/tube tent. I've had a plastic tube tent that I've used since junior high in the sixties to wait out downpours. But it weighs a couple pounds. The new one weighs a couple ounces and fits in a baggie. I won't hijack this thread, but if anyone is interested then let me know and I'll describe it in a new thread. The uses for foil tape just made me think about it.]

What about heavy duty aluminum foil ? Wrap it around the target or staple it to a wood back board. Not sure of the cost. Wider than duct tape. (not duck tape)

I have been using spray painted saran wrap over neon printer paper for cheap shoot n sees. Literally pennies a piece. They are not as noticable as the store bought ones but for the price I cant complain

I originally found it on youtube so if you search on there you can probably find a video.

What you will need to make them:
Paper (I bought http://www.officedepot.com/a/produc...Googlepla-_-Paper+Copy_Printer_Paper-_-170719 this and it is pretty noticable
Saran Wrap or stretch wrap (whichever you can find cheaper)
Some tape
Spray Paint (I use the dollar cans from walmart)

To construct them you take one sheet of paper (cut to whatever size/shape you want), cover it fairly tightly (not tight enought to bend it but bow it a little), tape the saran to the back of the paper, then paint them in the fashion you wish (most of mine are solid black with a sticker in the middle for a place to aim at).

Its not as good as the store bought ones, and I don't have a picture of a shot target but they work pretty well. I honestly think plain white printer paper would work about as good for cheaper but 15 bucks for 500 sheets of bright paper isn't breaking the bank.

There was a guy at my range last week wearing a T shirt with a Shoot-N-See target airbrushed onto it. I think it was some kind of promo shirt from the SnS people. It was slightly odd to see him downrange at the range break, with a full sized target on his back.

I'm sure nobody's going to shoot him at the range. But I don't think I'd want to wear it out to the desert where drunks were looking for opportune targets.

...
