Anybody own/shoot a MAS-36?

I've had so darn much fun with my Romanian .22 that I may be getting the surplus bug. Now I've got my eye on an MAS-36 (with safety added) that is converted to .308. This is good--I don't have to stock up on another kind of ammo.

Opinions? Flames? Anecdotes?

Any (easy) way to put a scope on one of these?

Is there an MAS-36 website I sould visit?

Hi, Dave,

Those rifles are fun from a design study viewpoint, as in how a major nation, on the verge of a war, can make something that dumb, apparently just to be different. As a practical rifle, I can only say to each his own taste. The 7.5 French really is .30 caliber (.308 bullet) so the barrel is fine for .308/7.62 NATO.

For anyone shooting a 7.5 French rifle in the original caliber, the French ammo is corrosive seven ways from Sunday. Prepare to clean, and clean, and clean.

I believe that I have seen these at gun shows. Is this the bolt action or the semi-auto I don't remember which? This information applies to the semi-auto. Anyway, I believe that I read an article in which they profiled this gun and they said that when they converted the chamber to .308 from the 7.5 french it was left very rough. This resulted it the case sticking in the chamber and causing a failure to extract. The article also went on to say that the 7.5 version of the rifle was better BUT ammo availability was spotty at best. I only know one company that has the 7.5 french and that was on links with the tracer round removed. on the plus side I recently saw an ad for someone who modified some type of magazine so that it would fit the rifle. I believe that the capacity was twenty rounds!! Hope that this helps---DAROGUE1

Hi, Darouge,

Dave didn't say, but the MAS 36 is bolt action. It has a five round non-detachable magazine.

I have a MAS 36 in 7.5 and have shot it a few times. I can't recall anything really bad to say about it. It is not very pleasing to the eye but it functions very well. French 7.5 ammo is not as cheap as most surplus Mil rounds so I have not taken it to the range as often as my other old guns. The extra step in cleaning corrosive ammo is not a big deal to me.
I have never seen much posted on the 7.62 NATO conversion bolt action MAS 36. But like you it has peaked my interest in the past.

Yup. The 36 is the bolt action. Hmmmm. The conversion to .308 left a rough chamber? Anyone know if the conversions were all done by the same group? My hunch is not. There's an article on 'em in Guns & Ammo's Surplus Special Vol 7. Pretty complimentary, noting the ease of conversion to .308, but not mentioning rough chambers. They reviewed the 7.5 anyway, and just mentioned that there were a lot converted to .308. Yeah, I know, gunzines are not known for bringing out any bad info.
