Anybody own a Ruger #1, 1 shot?

I'm left handed, and so struggling with bolt actions. I saw a Ruger No. 1, and it looked and felt very nice! I was wondering if anybody out there had one, and if they can tell me more about it?

Thanks!
Albert

I know that way several of us here have Ruger #1's. Looking at my 45-70 the cant of the stock is geared for a right hander. This is slight and might not be noticed. They are well made firearms, good to look at and good to shoot. Some aftermarket accuracy items are available if they should be needed.

The first sporting rifle I bought was a Ruger #1 in 375 H&H. I think that it is a great rifle. Mine consistantly puts 3 Sierra 300 grain spitzers into 0.75" at 100 yards with my favorite load.

I have 3, (45-70, 30-06, and .223) and love them all, they are aesthetically beautiful, mine shoot very well, and there is something about a single shot that makes you improve your marksmanship. With a little practice you can manage follow up shots by holding extra rounds between the fingers in the right hand, or left hand for you if you use the left hand to open the action, and load with.

I've had two and both were excellent performers. I sold the No.1-B (in .243) because it was too pretty to hunt with. I still have a No.1-S in 7mm/mag and it has been very nice.

I've considered selling it to help finance a PSS. E-mail me if you think you might be interested.

Thanks, I just talked to someone tonight that had one, and he says the same thing, very sweet.

Yep, there's something about a single shot that gives you pressure to make every shot count, and also makes you a better marksman...

I hear a 30-06 calling me... Don't stare at the light...

I only have 2 but I relly like them and want more. Both of mine are on either end of the spectrum. On the small end is my #1B in .22 Hornet which ios a sweet shooter in one of my favorite chambering's. On the big end is my #1H in .460 Weatherby. It was a .458 Win Mag that I had rechambered. My normal load pushes a .45 cal 500 gr RNSP out at 2,600 fps for a real thumper.

My first No.1 was a 1b in 25-06 that required some fiddling with the forend hanger before it started to shoot well--and then produced three-shots groups of .43 with 100-grain Ballistic Tips. It was traded away (nothing new for me) and very recently another No.1 followed me home. It's a 1H in 375 H&H, a very early rifle minus the warning on the barrel, the old checkering pattern and an S, rather than the word Safe ahead of the tang safety. Just a great rifle.

I also am a southpaw and picked up a No. 1-B in .243 last year. Like 2shots, I had to add some o-rings to the foreend, but after doing so, achieved 1/2 MOA grouping. A beautiful rifle, and yes, it does force you to improve your marksmanship.

My favorite rifles. let's see. .243 Win., .257 Robts., .270 Win., 7X57MM ,30-06, .357 Mag. ( that's right, a .357 mag.), .300 Win. Mag., .375 H&H, 45-70 Govt. and looking for more. :)

Well, there are many issues with choosing a rifle. First is the caliber. I got it narrowed down to two:

30-06, 300Win Mag

I think the 1 shot is great (sans the price tag!).

So time to save up and fatten the wallet so I can spend it on this wooden beauty...

Anybody want to comment on the caliber? Gonna do some whitetail hunting this summer...

I like the 300Win because it has great knockdown power. Will do big games easily.

But the 30-06 can be gotten in everything under the sun, I can get 30-06 anywhere in the world, and it's much cheaper than other rounds...

The 30-06 will do big game easily too, with less abuse on the shoulder and less flinching. If you handload, the mag is good as you can load it down, but the 06 is a more efficient cartridge, and if you don't reload, more versatile. Most experienced hunters agree that the 06 is enough for most American game. If you're after big dangerous game, you should probably have a .338. (and a lot of experience).

Great rifle! I shot one in 416 rem last weekend. What a hoot! I really like the compact size without giving up anything in barrel length. Let us know what you get.

I'm left handed, and have a Ruger 77 MKII left handed bolt action. Works great for me.

Remington, Winchester, and Savage all make left handed bolt actions.

I have no experience with the #1, but I like the style and wouldn't mind getting one. I understand that they sometimes have bedding problems.

Ruger #1

Had a #1 in .45-70. Good shooter but, sold it after shooting a TC Encore in .45-70. WOW!!

The Ruger shot in at 3" at 100 yds with open sights.

The TC shot into 1.4" at 100yds with open (peep) sights. Put a 1.5-4 Baush & Lomb, cuts .6" with 300 grainers.

Also, the TC has the interchangable barrels,is much lighter than the Ruger, comes in stainless and less expensive.

Just my thoughts. Ruger makes a fine firearm. Just my personal preference.

Ruger #1

TwoBlink:

I am a single shot shooter and have several #1's. They are great. I also have several Browning High Walls. These are also great guns.

I wold suggest you look at both in 30-06. You can plink anything you want from pasture poodles to bears with an 06. You already know that.

There is an advantage to the High Wall. Two or more inches of barrel. Browning puts a 28" barrel on it. A bit more velocity.

Just comments.....
