Anybody know of some good deals on a .38?

I think I'd like to get something like a Model 10, 13, 15 or 19. I'm also supposing that the .38s are cheaper than the .38/.357 combos, but either is fine. This would be my first DA wheelgun.

Anyone have any good leads on internet sales of something nice, but dirt cheap? I'm a little leary of the JG Sales cheapies - their prices never seem low on anything else, so I'd expect those M10s to be a little rough.

Thanks!

I suppose prefer adjustable, but a pretty model 13 would not be turned away for such a minor fashion faux pas.

Really, as long as a typical load will hit POA, I don't really care that much. I don't have a single adjustable auto any more.

Price range? The J&G M10s are used and do show finish wear. Coal Creek Armory did have some good K frames recently. I saw a M13 NYSP for about $400.00 the other day. M64s are stainless M10s and they are running $280.00 as are blued M&Ps with lanyard rings locally. I picked up a 6" M&P for $138.00 at a pawn shop. I suggest a M64 fixed or a P&R M66 in adjustable sight, 357 Magnum for flexibility.

My opinion:

If this is not going to be a carry gun:

Go w/ a Ruger GP100, or a S&W M686, M66 (or blued counterpart) w/ a 6" barrel. You can shoot .38sp all day, and still have the flexibility to go to .357magnum if you so desire.

You can get these used for around $400 give or take. Yes it is slightly more of an initial investment but in the long run, you will be glad.

.38sp only revos are lighter and more convenient for carry.

The best deals I`ve found are at the gun shows. You have to get there early to pick them up off the tables and always look to see what people are bringing in.The last show I went to I found a S@W model 30 in 32 s@w long for $105,4" nickle in nice shape and he was asking only $125 for it.I`ve bought 38`s and 357 Smiths for under $200.There far and few but they are out there!CHECK OUT THE SHOWS.Good hunting.

Gun shows are good places to shop, but also check your local pawnshops. Alot of people have traded their revolvers for more flashy semi-autos(the fools) and the good shops have revolvers priced to move.
Of course, you should always look on the internet auctions. There are some real bargains there too.

Handy,

I suppose prefer adjustable, but a pretty model 13 would not be turned away for such a minor fashion faux pas.

We've got a 4" Model 15 Combat Masterpiece at work that's mechanically sound with some holster wear around the muzzle. I'll see if I can't find out what our best price on it would be when I go in today...

I have visited the local gunshow 3 times and over that period of time, I have gotten acquainted with all the local shops in my area that go to the shows. Their prices are no different at the shows than they are at the store.

I have experienced this also w/ guitar shows. As a matter of fact, I have gotten way better deals on high end guitars from local small shops than I have ever been able to get at a show.

Last of all, the computer shows I've visited, are the same way. The reason everything is cheap is electronic depreciation which moves at a speed beyond light. It is a big dumping ground for "new" obsolete equipment. They are just trying to move merchandise to clear shelf scpace fo new stuff. My point again is, I can build the computer I want down to every detail, for the same price if I order the stuff across the Internet or go to a show.

The only reason you can find those "deals" at shows is that all the merchants are there at the same time. You don't have to trek across your state to visit all the gun shops to compare prices. The vendors don't drop their prices just because they have a booth at a gun show.

Sometimes it is the rareness of the gun and no matter what, if you want it, you are paying a premium. I recently did that very thing. I found a brand new, never shot, in the presentation box w/ all the paperwork, a 1990, #917 out of 3000 made S&W 629 MagnaClassic. I posted a thread a few days ago about it. I paid $895 for it. It was a consignment sale. Do I think I got ripped off? Not a chance. This gun is so accurate, I would have paid $1500 for it. With the thousands of collectors and shooting hobbyists, I doubt I would have ever run into another one in this shape.

I went a little off topic there but anyhow, many suggestions on where to look are good ones, just don't think gun shows are clearance sales of that nature.

Ninjato,

I have visited the local gunshow 3 times and over that period of time, I have gotten acquainted with all the local shops in my area that go to the shows. Their priced are no different at the shows than they are at the store.

As I pointed out elsewhere, there's little chance that a storefront FFL is going to pay the table costs and extra payroll that it costs to set up at a show, and then slash their already thin margins on guns. :o

Tamara, thanks.

Everybody, I guess I was a little cryptic. I'm looking for a classic, blued, round barreled, 4" K frame looking DA. Not some stainless underlugged uber-revolver.

From threads here, and scanning Gunsamerica, it looks like such a S&W is attainable for between $140 and $250, depending on condition. If $400 were an appropriate number I'd just buy something new. But the point is to get something "classic" and spend the minimum doing it, since I don't know if I'll even enjoy shooting a revolver.

I guess I'm looking for anything between a blued 3" model 36 and a 5" N. Any 10 years ago, I'd probably have a choice of hundreds of police turn ins, but there still seems to be bargains out there on these incredibly common guns.

Handy:

Don't over look the Model 13 because it has fixed sights. A lot of knowledgeable people think it is one of the best carry revolvers. I would glady pay $350.00 - $400.00 for a LNIB Model 13 with a 3" barrel and round butt.

Handy,

It's tagged at $350, but we'd take $325. I don't know if that's in the price range you're looking at for a "toe in the water" gun. If you're interested I can post pictures and a more detailed description...

While probably fair, that's a bit richer than I was looking. Thanks, though.

I guess I got all excited by the "$150 handgun" thread, but it does look like the low $200s will fetch a decent gun from a private sale. :)

The esoterica of Smith revolver prices can get confusing. A pinned-barrel 15-4 will generally command a price premium over a substantially identical 66-2 that is capable of firing magnum rounds, and is stainless, but doesn't have the pinned barrel. 3" round-butt 13's command substantial premiums over 4" square-butt guns. 3" N-frames trade at nosebleed prices compared to the much more mundane 6" guns. It's almost a hobby unto itself. :o

Your best bet would be to look for private sellers at gun shows, or pawn shops that believe Blue Book on Smith prices.

R.M. Vivas of Vivas and Son often has good deals on holster-worn former NYPD .38s. You might google his store and send him an email, or you can find him hanging around the S&W and Colt Forums. Vivas is good people.
