Anybody know about Canadian gun laws?

I am an 18 year old from British Columbia in Canada, and was wondering if anybody could help me with some questions. First of all I was wondering what it took to obtain a licence? From my understanding it is the course, followed by a test. Secondly, does this permit allow you to purchase and operate pistols/handguns? Or do I need a seperate (or extra) licence for handguns?
Also are handguns considered illegal in Canada, or just "restricted" and if so how obtainable are they. I want to learn as much as I can about gun safety, obey the laws and have fun. I want to pick up my first gun (hopefully a Glock) soon and take it to the range. Thanks!

In Canada?

Good luck.

The Liberal government, through a cult of personality around a person who has a personal loathing for guns, has made it nearly impossible for a law-abiding person to successfully navigate the legal requirements for owning firearms.

For example, in order to register as a collector of firearms and obtain a license, you have to already have a collection, for which you need a license. I gather, from an article in the Journal on Firearms and Public Policy put out by the Second Amendment Foundation, that there's various other Catch-22s like this.

This site, http://www.cfc-ccaf.gc.ca/, the Canada Firearms Centre, may be a good place to start your research. There's also http://panda.com/canadaguns/, intended for Americans, but it might give you some additional details.
