Anybody hunt deer with .45 LC?

Am going on a hunt over Thanksgiving in some brushy woods. The longest shot would possible be 80 yds but most will likely be around 50 yards.

Has anyone hunted deer with this caliber at these distance? If so, what bullets have given you the best results?

Thanks,

I use 300 gr hard cast bullets with a large flat nose. Very good accuracy in my Ruger Bisley using hefty charges of H110 powder. You will get complete penetration and good blood trails but will need to shoulder shoot (or hit some other solid structure) to ASSURE the classic 'bam-flop' result. Good luck-it's great fun!

Bullets style is probably real important

I've just gotten a 45 LC for this year. I guess I'd be careful about bullets.

Have a friend that got a 165 B&C at 65 yards from a Colt clone. Used a Hornady 250 XTP over 6.8 of Unique so he's only getting maybe 800 fps. He said the bullet had incredible expansion and knocked the deer down in a few steps. I suspect round nose lead wouldn't give that kind of performance.

Don't know if you've tried to track wounded deer in heavy brush at night....I have and strongly suggest something that knocks 'em flat.

Cor-Bon offers a 260-gr. JHP in .45 LC that rushes out at something around 1100 fps from a handgun. I'm going to give them a run out of my Ruger Blackhawk this Sunday, but from what I've heard they're pretty roasty-toasty.

Are you talking about handgun hunting or using a lever gun?

CORRECTION

CORBON'S 45COLT-265 JHP IS LOADED TO 1350FPS FROM 7 1/2" 45COLT BARRELS.
IT IS A KILLER.

EDITD FER TIPOOS
GEESH...

Bob Locke - I am actually thinking about using both. The rifle woule be a Win 94 Trapper model and the handgun would be a Ruger Vaquero with 7 1/2 barrel. I'm sure that the rifle would give better ballistics. Let me know the results of your Sunday shooting Bob.

Thanks,

I stand corrected.

1350! Wow!

I guess I'd better hang on for dear life! :D

Will post range results Sunday evening.

I'm also thinking about getting a lever gun in .45 LC so I can carry fodder for my sidearm and long gun and not worry about mixing them up.

If you're thinking of buying a levergun in .45LC, pop over to the Buy, Sell, and Trade forum...I've got one for sale!

FWIW, it's a Trapper without the crossbolt safety. They don't bother me much, but some people seem to hate those things.:)
