Thinking about this as my next rifle to use as a 200yd target shooter instead of bolt gun. Also as all-purpose hunting arm. What are your likes and dislikes concerning this model?

I have a buddy who has his scoped and uses it as a long range (300 - 600 yd) hunting rifle. It's his favorite rifle out of about 10 in his safe, if that helps at all. Sorry I don't have any details, but I haven't actually shot the rifle.

I've got this rifle in 25-06....can hit a grape fruit at 300 yards. Shoots well, carries well, easy to clean & maintain...I bought it about 1975.....not for sale.

I have a #1 in 30-06 that I use for hunting ground hogs and deer with. I had a canjer trigger(set) installed to replace the one that came on the rifle, as I did not like the Ruger trigger(non adjustable).

I am shooting 130 gr. moly coated bullets for the ground hogs, and 165 Nosler BT moly coated bullets for deer. Was lucky this past hunting season and got a nice 10 point at 270 yds with it.

It took some time and labor to find the load that it likes, but it was worth it, as it now will shoot 1/2" groups at 100 yds.

There's a nice article in the current issue of "Rifle" magazine about Ruger Number Ones; from .22 cal to .577 cal. This includes a target rifle that groups 2" x 4 1/2" at 800 yards.

Never had the 30-06 but I've had a No. 1-B in .243 that was a 1/2 MOA shooter and I currently have a No. 1-S in 7mm mag that does 1 MOA with factory ammo. The 7mm is listed for sale in the appropriate section of this forum. Feel free to take a look if the 30-06 isn't a hard requirement.

I've never seen a bad No. 1, the only drawback they have ever had is that they are a single shot rifle. But that's also the biggest thing they have going for them.
