Hey yall. I was thinking about getting a double-barrel, but dont really know much about em, I've handled one, but thats it. I have a single-shot H&R 20ga, and plenty of ammo, so I was kinda hung on whether to get a 12 or 20. I've already got a hundred round pack of birdshot and around 25-30 buckshot, so I didnt know if I wanted to get a 12, and plus, I've nvr fired a 12 before, and thought the recoil might be pretty harsh in a double. Any replies and help on this would be greatly appreciated! God Bless!

There are different types for different shooting sports. I take it you are talking about a side-by-side double-barrel.

There are moderately priced utility-grade guns - many from China, Turkey, Spain and Russia - that will take the hard knocks of a "truck gun" in stride. These will be less refined in fit-and-finish - some rather rough. But they are cheap and rugged - just not real pretty.

There are higher priced hunting-grade guns that have decent fit-and-finish - again most are from Turkey and Russia - that make great field-grade hunting guns that you would not be embarrased to carry.

There are the high-end hunting guns - from America, Belguim, Germany and Italy - that most of us will have to save a while to afford. These guns, while not top of the line, are beautiful in their subtlety, balance and performance.

Then there are the works of art. These guns are hand-built and many carry price tags bigger than your house mortgage - really! They are the best-of-the-best. The finest woods, the best steels and all of it hand-fitted. Just feeling and hearing the barrels snap shut in the receiver will give you goosebumps - they are that good!

Oh yeah, then there are the coach guns. The short barreled - usually external hammered - scatterguns used in the Old West. They are still a favorite with Cowboy Action shooters.

Mtnboomer covered it pretty well, it boils down to:
What are your plans for the gun?
What is your budget for the gun?
If you know those two items, all you need to do is search the web/ decent gun shops until you find what you want.
As far as 12 or 20 gauge goes, you have the 20 in a single shot, the double is going to "kick" about the same. (as long as you don't fire both barrels at the same time!)
A 12 will kick a little more.
This all depends on the weight of the gun and the type of shotshell you are using. I have seen some 20's that kicked harder than most 12's. A good recoil pad will help soften it some.
Good Luck on your decision.
Will
