Anybody ever have a FAL built?

Just curious, I keep seeing all the receivers and parts kits in the Shotgun News, and I've been reading up on the FAL files about the legalities (US parts vs. imported). Plus I've had a bad case of FAL envy since the Utah TFL get together last year (Thanks alot George now I won't rest until I have a .308 battle rifle :) Kind of like the 1911 I guess).

I'm thinking about purchasing an Imbel receiver, and then buying parts as I have the $. And then finally having it assembled and refinished by a good smith.

Have any of you gone this route? What were your experiences?

I figure that it would cost around $800-$900 or so including assembly and parkerizing. Thats just a loose figure from looking at different people's webpages.

Thanks.

have had a few done for me and some friends. afetr all is said and done i am into one for approx. $8-900 incl "bearcoat" teflon refinish www.bearcoat.com
and incl correct amount of us mfg parts to stay on the legal side.
and mags are on the inexpensive side for the time being. oh yeah i have a dsa one that the wait is now approx 3mths to whenever and my fn clone assembled by rich@cgw is as nice a shooter.
go to www.fnfal.com for more info. do not have the site but when you go to their discussion forums click onto the new site where almost everyone has gone to it's a ubb one

I did and went the super cheap route and only had a smith barrel and headspace it. It doesn't look fantastic, really more like issue, but it shoots very well (reliable at gas setting of 4-5).

Your pricing seems to be reasonable. Mine was about the same, but I used a DSA receiver because Imbels were scarce, therefore I paid $100-$150 more than you would now.

In stark contrast to my ongoing HK clone saga, the FAL was completely painless when it came to finding and buying quality parts.

I built mine 2 years ago on a DSA receiver ($400), STG kit ($200), First Sons US Parts kit ($200), DSA brake ($25), Belgian handguards ($80), DSA scope mount ($90), re-park and finish in Norrells Moly Resin HK Satin Black ($200), total= $1200.

I just picked mine up yesterday. I got it from a place in Minnesota called Federal Arms. It's built on an Imbel reciever and STG58 parts. Shot about 60 rounds though it last night, and it works great. I was impressed with the fit and finish as compared to the G3 I also bought from them. It is, of course, not on the same par as a DSA rifle, but it works for what I use it for (blowing shtuff up). I got a really good deal, spending about $550 all told, which ended up being almost cheaper than buying the weapon in kit form.

Hmm...I have an interest in this but don't know the first thing about buying by parts or kits or nuthin. I'm a dunce. :(

I know a new one is around $1400. It would take me 3 years to get it together to BUY one mnf'd.

Any links or anything so I can get an idea about the uppers and lowers and barrels and so on?

Also...do you need a permit to buy these parts?

The receiver is considered the "gun" by the ATF, so you need whatever is required to buy a gun to obtain the receiver. The parts kit is a collection of parts, not a "gun" according to the ATF.

The Shotgun News is a pretty good source, but definately read/search the www.falfiles.com board for a while before making a move.
