anybody ever bought a gun with the purpose of customizing it?

I recently acquired a NM springfield mil spec with the intention of customizing it, and so far I must say it made a huge difference. I figured it would be a fun way to learn amateur gun smithing through trial and error (dont recommend it). I added mainly wilson parts as I am not a big fan of mim. I added a beavertail .250, an aluminum 3 hole trigger, stainess pin set, FLGR (i prefer them for some reason), steel slide stop, and custom hickory grips. The slide stop required minor filing to ensure proper feeding and the beavertail required alot of filing and it was not a drop in as advertised. I refused to file any part of the frame. The new trigger made a big difference and has a very crisp light break. When I got the gun it had the rear sight dove tailed with a set of novaks already installed, extended thumb safety and commander hammer. I've never personally modified a handgun before and I must say I really enjoyed it. I wish I could post pics but this crappy phone won't allow me to. Anyone else have modified pistols (1911s, glocks, sigs, etc) they want to share?

Sure.
I purchased an Ishapore 2A1 in 7.62x51 that had been cut down by the importer to "jungle gun" specs.

I tossed the wood stock, scrubbed off the barbeque paint and had the barrel cut down to 14.5 inches before permanently attaching an FAL three-prong flash hider. It wears an XS Sight Systems scout rail just in front of the receiver ring for a LER telescopic sight and a short bit of M1913 rail on the receiver ring to hold a backup mini red-dot sight. The next step is getting a Kydex adjustable cheekpiece to make sure the eye lines up better with the sight.

It makes a snazzy little rifle (that you do Not want to be beside when it goes off) that can still mount a bayonet.

Oh yeah, several.

About six years ago when the new scandium framed S&W 360J .38spl snubby came out I bought one specifically for a light weight 9mm conversion project. I sent it off to Mark Hartshorne at Pinnacle High Performance and he did a moonclip conversion and rechambered it to 9x23, plus an action job and some other stuff. It's been a great gun, exactly what I wanted - a 13oz 9mm snubby - and very versatile since I can shoot 9mm, .38 Super, .38ACP, 356TSW, 9mm Largo, 9x23 Winchester, and probably a couple of others through it. Just sent it back to Mark yesterday to have him fit a titanium .38spl cylinder to it for even more versatility. I'll be able to swap cylinders whenever I feel like carrying a 10oz .38spl!

I picked up a Colt 1991A1 .38 Super several years ago for a future build. I had Dietrich Gunsmithy customize it, including fitting 9mm and 9x23 Winchester barrels.

Right now Dietrich's is doing a build on a new Colt Commander that I bought to have customized as a gift for my son to commemorate earning his way into AFSOC.
Here's a teaser pic he sent me-

I bought this Savage MKII BV specifically to trick it out for back field scale sniping games.

This is a S&W Model 10 that was someone else's unfinished PPC project gun that I took pity on, paid too much for, and had my friends at Dietrich's finish into a nice house gun for my wife.

Hey, 4thPoint, how about some pics of that Ishapore?

.

whenever I feel like carrying a 10oz .38spl!

Could you start a new thread to let us know how THAT feels? (recoil wise)

I might do it for ONE shot just to see how it feels...but maybe I'm smarter than that.

My most recent was buying a relatively cheap Israeli surplus CZ 75 Pre-B transitional model and turning it into a lower cost competition gun for IDPA ESP. It got a new set of sights, CZC Comp hammer, extended firing pin, SAO trigger, spring changes and some internal polishing for a smooth, crisp, and super awesome 2 pound trigger pull. It might get a CZ Custom Mag well and aluminum silver grips in the future.

Bought a S.A.M. Elite for the sole purpose of customizing it. So far I've replaced the FP with a WC titanium FP and overpowered spring, Added an EGW ambi safety, reblued safety, FPS and spring plug, added WC slide stop and Joe Chambers flat trigger. Eventually planning to fit a BTGS, hammer, sear, disconnector, extractor, and barrel/ bushing. Did my own grips as well. Those were unfinished.

yep got a Savage 110 .270 to make a 338-06 and a Remington 700 7mm mag to trick out for a deer gun then I have a mosen I not having a lot dun to it but just making it a more usable deer gun just new stock taped for sights turn down handle and a timmy triger on that one

Unless you count scratches I have actually never customized a gun. All of my guns are exactly the way they were when I bought them.

4thPoint, I also have an Ishapore 2A1 carbine. Yours sounds very interesting.
would it be possible to see a photo>:)

scrubbed off the barbeque paint
