Anybody else notice how good economical handguns can be?

I started thinking about this last night. I was talking to a friend who is relitively new to firearms. He has purchased two pistols, a Walther P99, and a Baby Eagle. He was remarking about how much better he was with the B.E. Even though it cost over $200 less.

Come to think about it I have heard almost no negative comments about a lot of the more "economical" brands. I'm not counting those paperweights like Davis or Lorcin.

For example, do you hear very many complaints about the following, all under $400:

Baby Eagle
CZ
Ruger
Kel-Tec
EAA
And I'm probably forgetting some others.

In fact these "economy" guns seem to have just as large a following as some $600+ brands that are out there.

Just an observation, thought I would share.

My Ruger P95 is the most accurate handgun I own. The only gripe I have is that it is to big for concealed carry.

I agree about the economical guns. I always read around the gun boards "you get what you pay for". If thats the case, I think a Ruger P95 should cost as much as a Sig, or Glock. (I'm sure glad it dosen't). I would take my EAA 45, CZ75, Makarovs, and Rugers 9s and 45s over anything else out there for the shooting I do. Can't carry concealed where I live so that's not an issue for me.

I own two FEG's, a PPK clone and an HP clone. I love 'em both. About $200 each. That savings covers lots of ammo and range fees...

My Baby Eagle is more accurate then my Bereeta 8040. ;)

I own an FEG SMC-380 which shoots at least as well as my two Colt Govt. .380s. It a Walther PPK clone. I scored higher on my CCW qualification with the FEG, it is as reliable a gun as my CZ-75, and is my most carried gun. Cost: $179.

Good topic. Regards to all,

I totally agree. All my handguns have been of the "economy" type. The most I ever paid for a handgun was $259.00. That was my Ruger P-95. I traded it in on the
KelTec P-11. My next will probably be a
FEG HP clone.

Really, why don't you guys report back when you have over 25,000 rounds thru those guns.... Glocks, Sigs, H&Ks, maybe Beretta,

I agree - and you have left out a few:

Astra
Star
Uzi
Heritage Arms
Maks and Tokeravs...
Taurus Millenium
All very good guns, none very spendy.

Many years ago on my 21st Birthday I went to a local sporting good store and got a Jenning 22lr for $65. I got it to carry around when I go fishing in the boondocks. That little pistol was one of the most reliable 22 pistol I have ever had. Also it was accurate enough to hit the heads of cottonmouth from about 10' when I took careful aim. After about 10 years and atleast 20,000 rounds later it started jamming and got worse as time went by. Later while cleaning the pistol I noticed the frame had cracked on the lower portion of the ejection port. It was one great pistol for $65. I think I'll look for another one at the next gun show.

No, you don't need to spend a lot of money to get a reliable and good quality gun. It's pretty hard to go wrong with a makarov, for instance. The two I own have never misfired or jammed. That said, there are plenty of "cheap" junk handguns that should be avoided if you don't want one to blow up in your face.

Everyone asks me what I'm shooting when they see my groups with the CZ 75. I don't get that with any other gun and I am no marksman.

I recently acquired a gently-used Taurus .380 for 300.00 and love it, but my Bersas hold tighter and only run about 175.00 each. I won't give them up for anything!

Ditto on the Bersa's. Mine is great. Nice tight fit, tight groups. And it hits where you aim it. My Ruger P94 is also a great performer, as well as my Charles Daly 1911.

What?! You don't have to spend as much as the govt. spends on a toilet seat to get a good gun! Amazing!

The Russian Makarov in 9x18 I have is, without a doubt, the BEST bargain I have ever made on a gun. Not that I don't like my other handguns, but nothing comes close to my Mak in terms of value. I love this gun. I will be buried with this gun.

FEG the best buy on the market. CZ makes great stuff. Ruger has the best metallurgy in the business. All great stuff. and if there is one thing Russians do well its make functional cheap weapons that last. Gotta love that Makarov. Remember the Norinco 1911? That was a steal.
