Any trick to painting a barrel?

I want to get an 870 Marine for home defense, but I also want to use it for skeet shooting. So I was thinking of getting a second 30" barrel. Could I paint it to match with something like this... http://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/stor...atalogId=10002&storeId=10001&categoryId=19043

in Cast Aluminum color?

I was thinking of getting an 870 Express and painting the whole gun to look like the marine model because I don't need the special nickel coating. What can I say, I'm a hot rodder so I like silver and black.

paint will chip. you might look into powdercoating. look up a powder coating busness and see what the heat ranges go up to. i know powdercoating comes in just about everycolor. and it wont chip off.

Yeah it'll work....Almost any enamel can be baked...Scuff it with 0000 steel wool, spray it, and leave it in the sun to bake. If you wann take the extra step, hit it with zinc chromate primer, then the enamel. It won't be quite as durable as some finishes, but will be not bad...And easy to touch up or re-do at a later date.

Edited to add: make sure there is ABSOLUTELY no oil or other contaminants on it before you paint. Use laquer thinner or alcohol to wipe it down.

Thanks for the replys.

I like the idea of powder coating, their is a place that does it right down the street from me. I assume I would need to remove all the old paint first. I have some remover left over from the paint job on my 71 Riviera. If powder coating is something like $100 then it would be cheaper than buying a Marine. Besides, if I bought a second barrel for skeet shooting I would have to do the same thing so it might be better to buy an express synthetic and get all the metal powder coated at once.

usually when you do powder coating there is no need to remove the old paint because they bead blast the finish to get it off and so the coating sticks well.
