I was just wondering for curiosity sake if the have made now or in the past a pistol that chambers .38 special or .357 magnum. Or If its just not practical.

(1) S&W mod 52 in flush seated 38 wadcutters for NRA 3 gun bullseye competition ( 22, centerfire - 32 cal and up, and 45 ).

(2) Colt 1911's converted to 38 MTU ( Army Marksmanship Training unit ) which was a 38 spl with turned off rim.

(3)Coonan arms 357, also I believe based loosely on the 1911.

Not a 38, but Walther put out I think it was called a GPH target(?), in either 22 rimfire or in 32 S&W Long with flat seated wadcutters as did Pardini-Fiocchi?

There had to be others. Clark built bullseye 38 spl Colt autos into a specialty.

About 10 years ago Grizilly (sp?) made 357 pistol which looked like over grown 1911. I believe they were available in 44 mag too.

Semi-autos have a "rimless" case and headspace on the mouth of the case.

Revolvers have a rimmed case and headspace on the rim of the case.

Rimmed cases are difficult to feed into a semi-auto. 22 cal. guns do it, but aren't designed for defense. The 25 ACP is a "22 cal" load designed for feeding in a defensive semi-auto. (rimless case, jacketed bullet for smoother feed ramp performance).

Desert Eagle makes a .357 mag semi-auto and a 44 mag. semi-auto. Both these are revolver calibers, and the Desert Eagle system has its share of design shortcomings resulting from the use of a revolver cartridge.

The 50 AE for the Desert Eagle is an attempt to resolve the problems associated with mag revolver ammo in a semi-auto.

Hi, JackFlash,

Just for the record, the .25 ACP, .32 ACP, and .38 ACP/.38 Super are semi-rimmed and are designed to headspace on the rim, not on the case mouth.

Guns and Ammo had an article one about obsolete guns that never made it. About 4 years ago and I vaguely remember that there were some early 38 SPL semiautos out of Europe but they had no market impact.

S&W M52 is made for .38 Spe. Wadcutters. I have shot this gun myself, and it is I think the most accurate gun I have ever shot(which actually doesnt say too much :)). Desert Eagle(that big handgun the agents had in The Matrix) is availible in .357 Mag among others. There have been some 1911 styled guns built for different calibers. One that comes to mind, I think is a factory gun I saw a couple of years ago called a Grizzly. It was availible in a bunch of calibers .357mag, .44mag, .45lc, and .45Win Mag, I think thats it.
