Any recommendations?

I was planning on buying a .22 rifle for backyard target shooting but the neighbors live about 70 feet to the side of my planned shooting area and my target can be set about 150 feet from me. so can any one tell me about available ammuniton that is primer only or has a very small amount of gunpowder. Aguila colibri rounds sound great but I don't want to have any damage to the barrel in a possible jam.

My suburban backyard is fenced in and the neighbors don't mind me shooting but I don't want to bother them if I'm out for a while. I have used adult spring airguns in the backyard before and they didn't mind.

For the "Any Recomendations" part, if the above is true, I suggest a good attorney.

30 FEET?? Are you in a subdivision? That barely makes side setback in most places. Unless you use a suppressor, there WILL be noise - even a spring-piston air rifle will be heard easily at that distance

I suggest talking to the neighbors, and offering to have them join in with you. Then it's merely a time-of-day, how long and how often if they're friendly to the deal.

If they're not against it, see what they think of the noise level of CBs and Shorts.

Legality and a safe backstop are the most important things when folks are that close...

Assuming you have a safe shooting area then I would say 22 short. If you are trying to shoot rabbits and ground hogs in a residential area then nothing is safe enough.

Even at 70 feet, your neighbors will hear an unsuppressed shot.

Make sure it is legal
Make friends with your neighbors
Make sure of your backstop

If those are all good, you should be as well

Enough booger-hunting. Take it for granted for the purpose of his question that all he wants to do is not make undue noise. Let's US assume the neighbors like him and it's all safe, etc., etc.

Sounds just exactly like my neighbor. I hear him shooting in his backyard from time to time. He likes his spring guns and has asked me for recommendations about CB caps, but I have no experience so I've not been any help.

Some suburban areas are very gun friendly and safe. Remember the four rules.

Thanks

Thank you for your opinions and suggestions. I think I am going to buy an assortment of CB caps and Colibris to see what works best.

I love the Colibri's. They're super quiet, and I use them all the time.
But as with everything there is a trade off.
  • They use just a primer chemical and no powder so yes, they are very quiet.
  • The pellet is very light - Doesn't matter if you're just punching paper, but if you are shooting small critters you best choose shots wisely.
  • If you are using them in a rifle - This is very important. MAKE SURE THEY EXIT THE BARREL EVERYTIME!! This is not a strong round and I have heard of them not exiting every time in guns with longer barrels. They may not be safe in some long guns!!
  • They probably will not cycle in a semi auto - I know they don't cycle in my 10-22, but I didn't expect them too. I just load them one at a time.
  • You will see a big difference in the point of impact compared to a regular .22lr cartridge as well.
  • You will have a vary limited range. I generally don't even bother with them if my target is more than about 50ft away.
Have fun! Be safe!
