Any pointers on making pistol grips?

...from a big chunk of nice wood? I have access to a huge block of American Holly -- looks like ivory. Not sure how to proceed and I don't want to waste it. The wood is still green (at my parents house from a tree that blew over in Ike) and my mom painted the end grain for me to keep it from cracking and splitting.

I'd probably practice on some cedar or hackberry first; I've got some of that in the garage and it's nice and dry already.

Make sure the grain runs lengthwise on the grip. Otherwise you are asking for a cracked/broken grip.
Nice tutorial. Not much harder than it shows. Just make sure that you take precautions as far as respiration on some exotic woods when sanding.
