Any opinions on SW99 in 9mm?

Aloha!

Does anyone have any thoughts or experience regarding the Smith and Wesson SW99 in 9mm. I was also wondering if all the S&W 9mm mags fit in any S&W 9mm pistol. Thanks for any help.

I've got a Walther P99. Basically the same thing. I went with the Walther over the Smith because the Smith was just coming out when I got it. I also liked the feel and looks of the Walther a little better. Finally, I have this unexplained craving to have an original over a copy.

Anyway, I love the Walther. I don't believe the mags fit in any other gun (I don't know of any other gun that takes 16 round mags). Good luck.

I've had the chance to examine both of them side=by-side. But, I've only been able to shoot the Walther in 9mm. IMHO, it's unquestionably worth the few extra $ required for it, vs. the *&*. The finish, the lock-up and the overall "feel" of quality strongly favored the Walther. VL

I have an SW99 9mm that I bought slightly used awhile back. I've only shot South African 9mm ammo in it so far. Probably put 100 rounds or so through it. It shoots low with that ammo, even when using the lowest front sight I have (I'm going to contact Smith & Wesson and see if there is a lower front sight - the numbering would indicate that there may be). I've heard that these guns tend to shoot low with 115g ammo and prefer 124g or heavier. That would be fine with me, except that the really low-cost practice ammo is all 115g. A friend has the same results with his Walther P99.

The gun is very reliable so far. The slide seems to fit a little loose in the frame - you can move it back and forth at the muzzle more than I'd like. I sent it back to S&W about this and they replaced the slide, but I don't notice a huge improvement. That said, it really isn't a big deal and I doubt that it affects accuracy. I haven't checked a P99 (or any other SW99s) to see if they are all like this.

The Walther magazines work fine in the SW99. I have three 16-round pre-ban Walthers and most of my shootin has been with them. No problems except that it is TOUGH to get that 16th round in. I had to leave the mags loaded with 15 for a few days before I could force in the 16th. I think they are fine now. Walther makes the frame of this gun, so other S&W mags don't fit. But pre-ban Walthers are probably still available (but will cost around $100 each or more).

Overall, I'm pleased with the gun. If I can get it to shoot to point of aim with cheap 115g ammo, I'll be even happier.

Only get the German made Walther.

Trust me. Never buy imitations or badged products.
The SW99 may be cheaper but you'll get wha t you pay for.

If you're buying a full-sized 9mm, have you at least considered a Glock 17 or Sig P226?
These are well known for their accuracy and reliability and have tons of accessories floating around. Hi caps all around and can be had for $65-$75.

Several months ago, I went shooting with a friend packing her Walther. It jammed and hiccupped on about 9 rounds out of 100 reloads. We also had some light primer strikes and had to double rack the slide a couple of times.

We had been shooting almost the whole rental case that day and all of the 9mm Glocks (19, 17, 34), all of the 9mm Kahrs (K9, MK9), all of the 9mm Sigs (228, 226), an HK Compact 9mm, and a Beretta 92 loved my reloads. solid
accuracy. No problems.

But this Walther was sensitive to reloads. Its accuracy was below all of the above guns I shot. I liked the grip on the Walther. The mag release was not charming. Sights were fine. But accessories are limited and those hi-caps will cost you. My friend went on a business trip to Germany and picked her hi-caps up cheap.

A couple of weeks later, I took the SW99 out for a spin and oh my gosh, it also choked on had 10 light primer strikes and failed to feed another 6 rounds of PMC ammo out of 100 rounds. And these guns are well maintained. These guy constantly clean these puppies.
r own conclusions but I hear few people ravfing about the Walther P99 or the SW99.
I'd buy several other Walther guns including a PP-32 circa WWII and their other 9mm's but not the P99. It's just not competitive with the rest of the LE or civilian 9mm field.
Draw your own conclusions but ammo sensitivity on 9mm is not acceptable for a self defense gun.

You sound like you really like the gun but consider all of your choices. Where are the SW99 owners on the Net?

Just think about it. For $650-700, you can buy a sweet Sig or even an HKP7.

Where are the SW99 owners? I am a happy one. Mine tended to shoot low and I sent it back to the factory who corrected the problem in less than a week!.

It eats anything I have given it so far although UMC loaded tight. I use 115gr win and Win supreme for Per.PRo.

I wouldn't be fearful of buying one. There are slight cosmetic differences between the SW99 and the P99 so check them out before you choose. Keep in mind you will save about $100 by going with the SW99 if you want to put a light on it. The SW99 has standard attachment rails. The P99 does not.

Also complete the CC package with an Alessi Conceal Carry holster. You won't regret it.

For the record, I'm very happy with my P99. It shoots to the point of aim, and is as accurate as my Beretta, Glock, and Sig. My only complaint is that it is somewhat ammo sensitive, but once you find ammo that works, no problem. Finally, it does have the accessory rails standard (and I understand it fits all HK USP Compact accessories).

Another happy SW99 owner here, JT. Although mine is in .40, I am quite pleased with it, and carry it regularly. It has never malfunctioned, ans shoots where I want it to shoot.

If your Walther breaks, guess where you will be sending it to for repair.

Springfield, MA.
