Doe anyone shoot at a 'No Blue Sky' range? If so, where is it located, and is it possible to see some pictures? A club in upstate central NY is nearing completion of one right now, quite an undertaking and a tremendous expense.
Do you mean completely covered? The firing line roof and downrange baffles are set up at our range so that you can't see any blue sky from the firing line, but there is certainly plenty of it once you start walking out. Seems like a total waste of money to cover it all up.
When I was a kid, one of the local outdoor ranges had baffles and deflectors all the way out to 90 yards. It eliminated any possibility of a bullet exiting above the berms, all the way to the 300 yard targets, unless the bullet managed to penetrate the baffles.
But, they tore everything out after the land beyond the berms was turned into a wildlife sanctuary (no more agricultural use). Now, they just have a bullet hole laced roof over the firing line. (Last time I was there ...in 1998, anyway. )
One of the military ranges I used near Eglin AFB also had baffles out to the 25 meter targets, but they allowed about 3 feet of room for 'escapees', above the berm. However, it was only a pistol range, and there was about 1/2 mile of dense forest between the berm and the next structure.
Spacecoast--it sounds like what you are describing. Club had to install it to keep the rifle range open after some careless shooters let their rapid fire climb up over their berms. Damage was supposedley done to a garage & vehicle a mile or more distant. Cost to the club for engineering & construction was phenominal. Town wanted it shut down permanently unless they did his.
That sounds like a reasonable precaution - at our public range both sides (rifle but especially pistol) have bullet marks so highly inclined above the firing line that it just leaves you shaking your head wondering who could have been so careless (and so often).
