Any news on Beretta 8357 Cougar?

I have found a couple of web sites that seem to talk about prices. Is this pistol any closer to our shores?

I have some stock options coming due next month, and the 8357 looks like what I am going to buy. People who own Cougars generally seem to rave about them, and the 8357 looks like one of the heavier platforms for this round. Since I don't intend to carry, the extra weight will be a positive.

By the way, someone here referred to a Gun Tests magazine review of one of the Cougars. Does anyone know which issue? I'm a subscriber, and I'd like to back-order the review.

Thanks,

Munir

I can't find that issue of Gun Tests, but Guns Magazine did a good review in their March 1999 issue. Personally, I have an 8040 and I want badly a drop in 357 barrel for it.

Is anyone making any kind of drop-in barrels for the Cougars? I thought the difference in action might have made the barrels much different than other drop-ins.

Thanks,

I've read reports that various State Trooper departments have been buying up ALL the 8357's that come available, NC was certainly one mentioned. Can't help but feel that while the Sig round is a good choice for shooting motorists with a nervous tick through their car doors, the 3.6" barrel of the Cougar seems unecessarily short for a duty weapon, wasn't the Cougar originally designed for CCW ? I have to admit it's a nice combo though.

Even though this may make it harder to get one initially, that probably good news in the long run.

WRT to the short barrel, yeah, I'd like it if it were longer, but without a custom barrel, the Cougar as long as everything except a P226 (which a lot more expensive), or a full sized Glock. I shot a Glock, and it really does not fit my hand, or is too light, or something.

For me, it comes down to the Cougar or the P239. I like the P239, but the Cougar is heavier, and the rotating barrel action seems pretty cool.

Ads indicate that the Mauser M2 (part of the SIG group) will come out in .357 SIG. And it has some sort of rotary locking like the Cougar, it seems.

Preserve Freedom, could you verify that for me? I looked through the very brief descriptions of the magazine in the July 2000 issue, and I see the Cougar reviewed in November 1997, and the MiniCougar in August of 1998. The March 1999 issue seems to be on 357 SIG pistols, but the only listed pistols are the Glock 31, the S&W Sigma, and the SigPro 2340.

Thanks,

Just by chance, I found one sample copy of Gun Tests that I got, and it's the one with a test of the Cougar 8045. The issue is the December 1999 issue.

The test was a comparison of the SIG P245, the Beretta Cougar 8045F and the S&W 4553TSW.

Munir,

So which gun, Glock 31, Sigma, or sigpro 2340 got a thumbs up in the magazine, if any? Thanks.

Also, if anyone has a phone number, etc so I could subscribe to Gun Tests, let me know :)

re: the Couger 8357:

On the Calibers talk group, www.greent.com, Todd said that the Couger 357 is the softest shooting 357 Sig on the market. The heavy frame and short barrel might have something to do with it.
