Any New Win. M70 Owners around? - Is 22-250 a different action than .308?

I was just making a batch of reloads for my 22-250 and decided to move the 55gr ballistic tips out to 0.03 from the lands to see how they shot a little closer to the rifling than factory, and I now realize that I can't even come close!
The mag box is extremely short, it looks like a short action, but with an extra block of metal tacked into the back of the mag box to limit the OAL of the rounds it can hold. . . either that or the 22-250 is built on a super short action.
Max OAL appears to be 2.435 but that is far short of even the standard length of other short action calibers.

Anyway, here is a pic of the mag box (with "size limiter) can anyone confirm that thier short action mag box doesn't have this (or at least that it has a smaller version of it). I am thinking that I can just swap the part out with a new one built for a 243,260,308 etc and then be able to make my 22-250 rounds to load out to the lands.

I have two 22-250 rifles. They both require single feeds if the bullets are loaded to the lands.

JFYI, I have found the BEST accuracy, with loads from -.065 to -.085 off the lands.

If I load my rounds to those lengths, they will load into the magazine.

One rifle is a Ruger M77V and the other is a Remington 700.

Hope this helps.

To answer your question, they are both long actions. The spacer is the give a way. You can take the space out of the mag well and load your cartriges a bit longer.

There is nothing inaccurate about the long action vs. the short actions. To give you an example, look at the M40 Marine Sniper System and the Army's M24, both are Remington Actions, but the M24 is a long action, the M40 is a short action. The M24 shoots every bit as good (I think better) then the M40.

Sadly kraigwy, this is one Rare instance where you may not be entirely correct. The mag box is shortened to 2.435 but without the space filler would only be 3.00" and the spacer can not be removed (easily) as it is one piece of heavy gauge steel shaped and seemingly spot welded in place.

Being as I am an apartment dweler at the moment and don't have access to many tools, it looks like a trip to the machine shop might be in order for some cutting and welding....unless, as I suspect, 308 based cartridges use the same magazine well box but without a spacer, and I can just swap in one of those.

Bingo we have a winner (I think, I dont know as I haven't had anything to do with a new model 70 in 22-250). Alot of rifle manufacturers do this and usually you can grind, chop, pull ect the spacer out or get another magazine without that spacer in it.

I have seen the length of the short action Mod. 70 magazine box listed at 3.1 inches, while the long action box is 3.6 inches. The metal spacer makes feeding more reliable for your much shorter 22-250 cartridge.

Remember, if you remove the spacer or replace the box with a full size short action box, that when you seat bullets closer to the lands it INCREASES pressure in bottleneck cases, so back off your powder charge if it is max.

I had to Dremel out the spacer (a little) in a Tikka 223 to seat the 75 grain bullets. I keep all my rounds 40 to 50 thou off the lands. With the 75 grain pills they are a different shape to the lighter bullets and if you want to stay around 40-50 thou off the lands with the heavier bullets they then wont fit in the magazine and if you keep the OAL short enough to fit in the magazine IMHO the jump to the lands is to much and you reduce the powder capacity by quite a bit.
