Any law enforcement agencies still using the 147gr. 9mm?

long shot

Just curious if any agencies are having enough success w/ this load to have kept it as their duty load.

Thanks...long shot!

The Los Ageles Police Department and the Los Angeles County Sheriffs Department issues Winchester Ranger SXT in 147gr for 9mm pistols. Seems to work pretty well.

U. S. Customs Service issues it for both the 6946 S&W and the Glock. Seems to be an accurate load, results of shootings are limited. In the two cases where I have information, it seems to work okay. The details are sketchy.

Hey, I know a department here in Alabama that
issue's "Black Talon's", in 9m/m, .45ACP,
.38Spl/.357 Magnum; and are known to have some in .44 Rem Magnum!!! :) Go figure :D

Those agencies with a firearms staff who study the literature re wound ballistics probably rate some of the 147 gr loadings at the top of their short list for use in full-size pistols.

Those who consult "energy" tables as an indicator of effectiveness or who aren't familiar with wound ballistics probably dismiss the 147 as ineffective. Or they choose another round to more closely fit their expected/anticipated use parameters.

The truth is, there are a number of 147 gr loadings that have proven to be quite effective. I don't know if they still do, but the San Diego PD used the 9mm/147 and experienced good results. YMMV.

Austin, TX, PD, 147 SXT. Amarillo, TX, PD, 147 Speer Gold Dot.

Last I heard the Military Criminal Investigative Services (Army CID) in particular received authorization to field 147 gr 9mm rounds. I do not know who got the contract, and I haven't seen any yet, but I know that it should be issued shortly.

Of course, what do all those Forensic Pathologists, Combat Surgeons, and other wound ballistics RESEARCHERs know? :)

Chuck

Last time I talked to any ammo company reps about it, it was still the most popular LE load by far in 9mm by contract sales, though the 124 and 124 +P are coming on strong.

The lighter 124 and 115 grains in + P are now the standard in most law enforcement agecnies.

Unless you are a PD its a moot point. Most cops carry whatever they are given so those "stats" don't ring true from a comparative point.

The 147 grain is a limited performer. Why not go to a SW 40 round and get a 165 grain bullet with speed and penetration?

Maricopa County (AZ) Sheriff's Office issues 147 gr Ranger SXT for those who elect to carry 9mm. I have heard that the Speer Gold Dot is under review and may be a future issue round.

I made the mistake of purchasing 9 mm defensive ammo (bought a bunch of hollowpoints for my various caliber handguns) without checking the weight. Now I have a couple boxes of 147 grn golden sabers. Should I scrap them as expensive target ammo or go ahead and keep them in stock ?

I spent an hour arguing with the nimrod clerk on why I prefer a 230 grn .45 load to some newfangled 165 grn crap. Apparently mister "ex navy seal/ninjitsu master/rambo's stunt double knowitall" assumed I woud prefer the 147 grn load too.

New Zealand Police issue Federal Hydr-Shock 147's for the Glock 17.

Last few shootings we've had it's worked when it's been put in the right place.

From FBI data summaries:

Rem 40S&W 165 GS: 14.75/.65 bare gel, 14.35/.66 after cloth

Speer 165 Gold Dot: 13/.65, 16/.60

Rem 124 +P GS: 12/.65, 14/.60
Speer 124 +P GD: 13.4/.68, 20.25/.53
Rem 9mm 147 GS: 12.8/.66, 14.2/.66

Wow, what a difference? :)

Our SWAT Team uses 147gr Gold Dots in their MP5 subguns. I don't carry a 9mm, but I think we issue 124gr Gold Dots for regular duty ammo.
