hey, i am looking into getting a nice six shooter and have seen a US patent firearmsCco. SAA locally and on the net. someone said they used to be the now USFA co. still making saa. can anyone comment on the quality of this gun or information sources for more info.

thanks

Same outfit.

US Patent Firearms Co, Inc was the original name, Colt protested. Don't see how you can copyright "patent" but they got it dropped.
These are earlier guns with some imported parts. Decent guns.

Currently dba US Firearms with all US components. Very nice guns, maybe the best Colt clones on the market... including Colt.

The ones I have seen were manufactured by Uberti and assembled in the USA. They were pretty decent. Colt sued them under. They were sold and renamed USFA. USFA claims to be all American. USFAs and Colts are both nice single action revolvers. No, I don't think they are as good or better than Colts. They are nice. The USPFAs clone is a nicely finished Uberti and uses Uberti parts. I have heard differing stories on heat treatments/hardness of critical parts in USPFAs. Some were hardened and rumour has it that some weren't. My opinion is that they were a Italian clone and should be sent to the gunsmith for rebuilding/heat treatment and action jobs. If you want a collectible, buy Colt. If you want a shooter, Buy Ruger. If you want a wallhanger, buy a clone.

well as you know i had picked up that older model Colt and after some final cleaning and research, it looks like a parts gun with the the backstrap and trigger guard from a later colt gun. now i am not sure i want to shoot it. it may endup as my wallhanger and display. cleaned up real nice. seems to lock pretty tight when you cock it fully, the bore does have some minor pitting near the end but the gunsmith said otherwise it was ok to shoot. Now i am in the hunt for another weekend SAA to play with. i have seen a used 2nd gen colt that looks promising. some said the 2nd gen is better than the 3 rd gen. prices are pretty close. alot of people are happy with the USFA rodeo. the close seem like a good starting point. i have a friend who bought 2 of the EMF hartfords and said he would make me a sweet deal on the extra . he decided not to go and do the SASS. i think he wants 350.00. new in the box outside of him handing them. the USFA is like 600.00 and the colt 2nd gen like new is 900.00 i dont mine paying more if the quality is there and longevity. resale has some play , but i realy want to shoot it so i dont consider this a money making decision. i dont want to spend 600.00 either when i could of /should have bought the colt. For that matter ,why spend 600.00 when the EMF hartford may well be a fun shooter for my needs. both are 45lc case hardend P1840 copies.

I would pass on EMFs. They have had ASMs, Ubertis and Pietta making revolvers for them. They market Hartford and Premier as their best. Not hardly. Your better bet is to find a shop familiar with CAS, firearms and a experienced gunsmith. I lean towards Taylors and the new Replica firearms made by Uberti in clones. Good value for the money. Ruger is built to last. Avoid AWAs, ASMs, Beretta Stampedes and check Piettas over carefully. Uberti is the clone for a budget. USFA is a nice revolver. I know of no negatives for USFA. Avoid Great Western revolvers unless a gunsmith OKs them. These were mostly kitchen table assembled kits. Quality varies widely. EMF had a run called Great Western II manufactured for them by Pietta. They are plagued by soft metal. I don't think you would be well served by one. I rank them as USFA, 1st in clones, Uberti, 2nd in clones, Pietta, 3rd in clones and Mateba, dead last in quality. EAA imported German single action clones, these were pretty good. They launched ejector rods but, that is the only bad thing I know of on them. It really comes down to how much money have you got? Colts will go up and up in value. A clone, any clone is not worth more than what you pay for it. A clone may not be worth what you paid for it and you could lose money on some. (AWA) The CAS folks that I see and know usually shoot Rugers, Colts, USFAs and Ubertis.

I was over on the CAS site, and they were commenting on the various clones. seem there is alot to be said about most of them. this EMF is the uberti clone , new pistol made in 2004. i did see the great western II and alot of people like them as well. i read on the USFA but i dont know about the finish. i was incline to get more of a Casehardend finished. i see a few guns come form Mr turnbull with the case hardening but the price jumped alot. thanks for the info. if you want to see some other opinions . look here.

Having recently researched the SAA subject, here are my condensed two cents.

Item: No matter how nice they may be, clones are not original Colts. If the name and heritage is of significance to you, buy a Colt.

Item: If you want to shoot it and don't care about the name, buy a Ruger. Other brands can be very nice but the Rugers are above the rest in shooters' opinions on durability and quality.

Item: There are a great many clones with plenty of positives but at the end of the day a Colt is a Colt and the proven by the numbers quality
of the Ruger is what it is.

They are also both made in the USA and I want my money to support US workers and US companies who pay taxes in the US.

As for me at the end of my research I purchased a G-Series Colt Peacemaker .22 LR/WMR and have the new Ruger Vaquero in .357 on order. Both in blue/case hardened.

well, i have a colt, and its more for keepsake now than a shooter, I dont have to have a second colt, i would be happy with a decent clone. i am hearing the new EMF by urberti are much better and this is a new gun made last year. i did hear the ASM were not so great. the Great western II has caught my attention due to the fact alot of gunsmiths and colt owners seem impressed with this gun and its cheaper than the USFA. the model i could get a deal on is the USPFA which if i understand you correctly is probably more like a low cost Uberti. Does it matter that the Great western II are getting hand tuning and CCH done by Doug turnbull. it would seem if he thinks they are good enough for him to sell with his name on it . it may be decent. I know now he is using the USFA guns but his price is alot higher now to. i just want a decent fun shooter but if its crap out of the box then why waste the money. this is why i listed the Hartford by uberti vs the USPFA. i dont consider the Ruger just do to the size factor and weight. i have read about the new one but its still higher in price . than the other 2 i am looking at. so i pose this question. is the USPFA older model. better than the new high grade Uberti that has upgrades like CCH and work done by Doug Turnbull

Usfa

In my opinion USFA makes the best single action out there for the money. I own quite a few single actions from various makers including Colt. I shoot them all quite frequently and the USFA and Uberti are the only ones that shoot just fine with a smooth action right out of the box. Sad to say the Colt's are the most terrible actions, they feel as if someone took a handfull of sand and dumped it inside. It normally takes me an afternoon to get them right and clean up the action.USFA's are always fine just the way they are shipped.
