originally develop in the late 20's early 30's by G. Virgil Howe ( as in Griffin & Howe) and named in honor of Col. Whelen. Designed on the 30-06 case, necked up to .358 caliber, for large North American game. Also Howe designed a .400 caliber whelan, but had little neck/shoulder to headspace on.
The current .35 Whelan by Remington, has a difference on shoulder angle than originally designed.
