any info on the 35 Whelen

The .35 Whelen is a very capable round for all North American big game animals. As far a true brush gun there is no such thing. If a bullet comes in contact with anything the trajectory will be changed. How much is it changed your guess is as good as mine, will it be enough to cause a wounding shot vs a clean kill? Best thing to do is find clear shooting lanes on game and not try to shoot through any kind of brush.
As far as performance goes most Whelens will push a 250 grain bullet around 2600 fps pretty easily. 200 grain bullets will go around 2700+ fps and a 225 somewhere in the middle. Some people like to load pistol bullets in thier Whelen's for plinking, and there are some single shot pistol (SSP) bullets available that were designed for use in T/C pistols that are lighter than 200 grains in a traditional spitzer design.

My Whelen works pretty good as a brush gun, around the same as a 30-30. My 30-30 is more forgiving to shoot than my Whelen, but I like guns that kick.

originally develop in the late 20's early 30's by G. Virgil Howe ( as in Griffin & Howe) and named in honor of Col. Whelen. Designed on the 30-06 case, necked up to .358 caliber, for large North American game. Also Howe designed a .400 caliber whelan, but had little neck/shoulder to headspace on.
The current .35 Whelan by Remington, has a difference on shoulder angle than originally designed.

My favorite cartridge, I own three .35 Whelens. With handloads it is awesome, my favorite load pushes a 250 grain Nosler Partition at 2550 FPS out of a 22" barrel. It STOMPS any animal that gets in its way. I shot lengthways through a 7 foot grizzly with this load. Bullet entered near shoulder and exited opposite hind quarter. This cartridge will reach out better than most give it credit for also, it is not just a short range thumper.
