Any impressions of your S&W 627 2 5/8 8 shot?

I'm considering the purchase of a S&W 627 in the 2.625", 8-shot, .38/.357 config. Seems good for backpacking and camping, is moderately carry-able, and can share some accessories (e.g. speed loaders) with my 627 V-Comp.
Who out there has one or has shot one? Any impressions, likes/dislikes or warnings?
Thx,
B

If you have the 627 V-Comp with the longer barrel, it would be nice to get the identical gun with the 3" barrel. They didn't make many with the 3" barrel, but they are out there.

Fantastic Gun

I have more than twenty handguns, revolvers and semiautos of various types and sizes. My S&W Model 627 with 2 5/8 barrel is absolutely one of my favorites. I am carrying it right now IWB with bellyband. It shares "most often carried" status with my Ruger SR1911 Commander.

I've installed 3 dot tritium night sights on mine. Fun to shoot, very accurate.

Thanks Joshua. That's great to hear. Do you carry Magnums or Specials? And same for the range. What do you typically shoot there? I do tend to put 'radioactive' sights on all of my handguns (though they are pricey so it takes a while to catch up').
Re Mr. G., I have looked for the 3" barrel but I didn't think it was an 8 shot. Is it? Do they actually make a 3" V-Comp (my .357 V-Comp is a 5" plus the extra length for the comp which is about 1") or am I misunderstanding your note? And is there a substantial difference between a 3" and 2 5/8" when shooting .38S and .357M (presuming no comp on either)?
Please keep the feedback coming. I have heard everything from 'it's a perfect and smooth-shooting carry gun' to 'it will blow your hand off with .357's'. Quite the breadth of opinions but I don't know how many people making those comments have actually shot one.
That's why I came here.
Thx,
B

I shoot 158 grain magnums in mine. For range, whatever 158 grain brand I can find, but it's usually American Eagle. If I shoot a lot at any given session (for me, with magnums, that would be 100+ rounds), the web between my thumb and index finger will get blistered and bloody. So, I've learned to wrap a couple layers of foamy adhesive tape around my thumb, and wear a golf glove. With that, I can shoot all day. If I'm only going to shoot a few cylinders, I won't bother with that.

For carry, it's Buffalo Bore 158 grain Tactical, Lower Recoil JHP. That stuff isn't really "low recoil", it's just not their super-hot stuff. To me, it seems like their Tactical shoots about the same as anyone else's regular 357 magnum.

I owned a nice Performance Center S&W 627 V-comp 8shots 6" for 3 years and only shot it a handful of times. Very accurate out of the box and comes with 3 moon clips. But I'm one of those anal/OCD/meticulous ...however you want to call it...when it comes to cleaning your guns after every trip to the range. Well, I just hated that black ring infront of each cylinders(even after 5-10 shots!) and have bought numerous solvents and fine steel wool and LOTS of elbow grease to get it back to normal. What i needed to buy was the same gun in blued, but even so, the cylinder wasn't blued. So I find myself keeping it more like a safe queen and decided to let it go. I missed it ever since...now I see my buddy shooting it and the front the cylinder are all black and he didn't cared. Good for him.

I've not been able to find a 3" PC with removable comp in the catalog or on-line anywhere. Perhaps you could point me to a URL?
Thx,

BF,
When I bought mine new the dealer told me that there were only about five hundred 3" V-Comps made. Don't know how true that is, and I have seen a couple for sale used since buying mine.

The 627 UDR (Ultimate Defense Revolver) you're referring to, AKA the Bloodwork Gun, is a nice revolver, I had a pair of the original 302. The issue with them, IMO, is weight. They're already bulky as is every other snubby N frame but being all steel they weigh a ton and that isn't something you want in a backpacking gun. You might look for a 327 Night Guard, same 8 shot .357mag N frame but with a scandium frame bringing the weight down to around 24oz, much more manageable and backpacking friendly. It has a 2.5" barrel and XS big dot tritium front sight and a Cylinder & Slide Extreme Duty fixed rear sight. S&W doesn't make them anymore but if you like around there are out there at reasonable prices.

So unable to locate a 3" V-Comp PC 627 anywhere (though there were a few closed bids at auctions where they were sold for $2200-$2800 USD's!!) I found a lightly used 627 2 5/6" 8 round N-frame in .357. So, no V-Comp which is too bad, but 3/8" shorter which just may be a good thing and matches what I was looking for. One small blem made the price measurably but not enormously under retail.
Should be in the air today so I will see it soon. The CA DROS process will have me delaying pickup for more than a month due to my queue but no worries. My FFL is a buddy and I'll have visitation rights.
Now the question is whether to get the matching gun in .44 or something functionally and parametrically different. The 2 5/8" S&W PC is a stainless 6 shot (model 629). I've been watching oilthegun who has imparted some good and consistent advice.

Had no idea a 627 3" PC V-Comp was worth anywhere near that much! Have one that I bought new and never fired in my safe. Came with the aluminum PC case and original factory box with serial number.
