Any ideas on value?

While I was in Idaho on vacation, I looked over my dad's old Winchester. Here's the description:

Model 1886, 45-90, octagon barrel, no bluing left on the gun, stock replaced around 1950, serial #51xxx, much pitting in the barrel but action seems good and solid.

Any info much appreciated.

That gun was made in 1891. They are fairly common, as about 160,000 were made through 1928. In top condition (like new) they can go for as high a $4000, but in the condition you describe the current value is only around $500 or less. The hard use and the non-original stock both detract from the collector value, and .45-90 ammo isn't readily available, which takes it out of the deer hunting category.
