I already subscribe to guns&ammo, handguns, the american rifleman and the new Nra guardian mag. I was wondering if there are others I can subscribe to and do they have websites to maek my subscriptions easier?

thanks in advance.

"We are fast approaching the stage of the ultimate inversion: the stage where the government is free to do anything it pleases, while the citizens may act only by permission; which is the stage of the darkest periods of human history, the stage of rule by brute force."

--Ayn Rand, in "The Nature of Government"

Try reading a few issues of "American Survival Guide" Thoug not actually a "gun" mag, it usually has quite a lot of useful info, and occasionally a gun test of one sort of another( so-so )

nralife, goa, jpfo, fcsa, smvfm
paranoia is a pretty good thing to have when they're actually out to get you!

Might I suggest "The Shooting Times?" I tend to enjoy reading it on occassion as well.

While not a gun magazine, the Midway catalog has some good reading material too. 8-P

American Guardian is very good for RKBA/political.

I gave up on Gun Tests - good idea, just not comprehensive and analytical enough for me. It's OK, though - much better than the general gun rag nonsense.

Depending on your interests, you might try Combat Handguns, Guns & Weapons For Law Enforcement, American Handgunner, and Shooting Times.

Finding good gun magazines is often tough because big chains like Barnes & Noble or Borders don't seem to stock them much. Some gun stores stock the magazines. I'm lucky that my local bookstore is run by a civil libertarian and has three six-foot shelves devoted to publications on guns, knives, bows, hunting and militaria.

As a writer, one thing I've noticed is the marginal quality of writing in a lot of gun mags. I recognize that the reviewers and columnists are shooters and not primarily journalists, but the editors could certainly nudge their contributors toward clearer explanation of technical details, toning down sensationalism and less indulgence in self-stroking egos. I also have trouble finding a bad review of anything; I'm not sure whether it's because quality is so high, or because the publishers don't want to offend advertisers, or just because no one on the staff wants to review Lorcins and Hi-Points.

American Handgunner and Gun World seem to have the best standards of writing technique. I won't go into details of which others have which flaws (unless someone REALLY wants me to). :)

Guardian changed to America's 1st Freedom a few months back. I was wondering what happened to my American Guardian and why I was suddenly getting this new one...

1st Freedom is a lot larger and more comprehensive than the Guardian.

The Texas Barnes and Noble have really good selections in San Antonio and Austin.

In fact, I enjoy getting something at the coffee shop and reading a wide selection for free. Since, the game is selling advertising I have no qualms about this and I buy enough regular books that they can't complain.

In fact, one of the San Antonio B&N had a book signing by Chris Bird who wrote a concealed handgun book.

When Starbucks put up a no guns sign (since down), I called the BN management who assured me it was not their policy.

I like "Shooting Times" and my favorite, "Combat Handguns". CH has some pretty good reviews of all types of guns.

American Survival Guide, has unfortunately gone poltically correct and has not run one gun related article in 2 months now. Apparently, ASG will no longer exist in October and will be renamed "Self-Reliance Guide" or something of that sort. Jim Benson, the current editor is said to be leaving in dissapointment as to the direction that the publication is heading.

I also like "Combat Handguns" www.combathandguns.com (online sub available) and "The Shooting Times".

I also receive the NRAs' new one, "America's 1st Freedom", though it does seem like "old news". Usually I've already hear about it on the Internet.

I also enjoy "Guns and Ammo" and "Handgunner".

The two great magazines for riflemen are "Precision Shopoting" and "Tactical Shooter".

I liked the few issues of "Hatari Times" that I saw, but did not subscribe. Its published in Belgium in both English and German editions and focuses on African hunting. The Euroupeans are really big on Africa and it is a big subject indeed.

Precision Shooter, Tactical Shooter, Rifle, Handloader, Small Arms Review, Gun Tests, and Soldier of Fortune are the ones that come to mind. Admittedly, they all have their flaws, but of the scores of gun periodicals, these are the ones that tend to contain interesting technical information and/or not to act as proxies for the marketing departments of the gun and ammunition manufacturers. Contrast Handguns, Guns & Ammo, American Handgunner (except for Ichiro Nagata), et al. Need I say more?

I suppose that the writing in all of them tends to be workmanlike at best, but we're not talking about New York Review of Books, we're talking about gun magazines. What do you expect, after all?
