Any decent air guns under $100?

I would like to get a new or used barrel-cock single-shot pellet gun (pistol OR rifle). Main use would be plinking w/o going to the range. I would prefer something that can take an aperture sight, but it will not be necessary for such short range.

Can you recommend specific models to seek out or to avoid? Also, how can I tell if a used air gun is in good shape?
