if i like the 45 i will invest in a top of the line eventually

give some suggestions guys:)

The Ruger is a great idea, unless you are looking for a 1911 style to see if you like it before dumping a wad on a Colt or a Kimber. If that's a case, you can't beat an inexpensive FireStorm.

Suggest a Ruger 45ACP as an excellent choice, or you might search for a disenchanted Colt/Kimber/Springfield owner and buy that.

Then send it back to be fixed...

The Sistema (Systema) .45 acp advertised in the Shotgun News is about as good a .45 as you can get, short of a custom .45, and the price is certainly right.

This is a gun built on Colt factory machinery by Colt factory-trained machinists, .to the Colt Factory standards of the 1930's and 1940's. (That was top quality.)

Everyone I've talked to who has bought one loves the gun. It is absolutely Colt standard and all parts are interchangeable. It is made of top-quality steel. Dealer cost is around $300 (maybe a little less) so you should be able to get one for a reasonable price. Perhaps a local dealer will order one for you for cost plus a reasonable transfer fee.

The Ruger P-97 ain't bad, either. And surprisingly, some of the EAA Witness .45s are pretty good guns, too. And then there's the CZ-97.

I'd try to find a used 1911, probably one of the Argentine or Sistema. They might be run down, but they're inexpensive, parts are plentiful, and they're easy to work on.

I think Rugers are GREAT guns, but I HATE their semi-auto handguns. They're BUTT UGLY. I fired one in .45, can't remember what model, but DAMN was it SLOPPY. It felt like the slide lifted up off of the frame, then slammed back down onto it every shot! Before I get flamed, I'm sure I was just handling a bad example of Ruger. As I said, I love Rugers... I have a M77MKII and a 10/22, and love them both. I like their six-guns, it's just the autos that I don't like much.

I'll stick with my Springfield!:D

The Ruger would be a good choice, as would the Witness 45. I belive the Witness would be even cheaper than the Ruger, my 9mm Witness was only $275 and is 100% (so far) reliable and very accurate.

I sold my SA 1911 and got a Ruger P97. The P90 is good too - very accurate and durable. The P97 feels better though and feels like a cross between a 1911, Sig 220, and Glock.
