Any comments on the Ruger GP100s with 6 inch barrels?

I have always had an interest in the GP100. Never bought one. Have suddenly developed a hankering for the stainless version with 6 inch barrel and short barrel shroud. With a trigger job I figure this will be a real joy to shoot, even with full house .357 loads. The revolver weighs in at 43 ounces. Any thoughts or comments? Purpose is (1) fun, (2) woods gun, (3) home defense. Thanks.

Dogger, I shot a GP 100 years ago and I loved it. Why don't I own one? I haven't ran into one with the right price at the right time. I wouldn't think twice about it. The Ruger is a fine revolver and it will be a great addition to your collection. Regards, Richard.

Dogger,

I shoot a KGP-141 (the all stainless, four-inch barrel, full underlug, adjustable rear sight GP100). It, like all the GP100 series, is an outstanding revolver. Further, I am not at all sure you will require a "trigger job"; I suggest you shoot a few hundred rounds before making that decision.

I've got one with the 6 inch barrel and like it a lot. The heavy weight of the GP100 makes the full load 357 Mag rounds seem pretty tame compared to a SP101 snubby. Its robust frame will last a lifetime and the price is great too. I would also recommend that you check out a used S&W 686. Smoother trigger and just as accurate. Mine was LNIB and went for $300 (this was before the sellout). You'll be happy with either one of these fine revolvers.

sturdy gun, youll find the wolff spring an improvement.

youll have a hard time finding a factory load that you cant shoot. nothing causes enough recoil that you cant comfortably shoot.

easier to take apart also

Tack drivers. Friend had one, he blew up the cylinder with some Federal ammo. Ruger replaced it no charge. :)

Have a KGP-161 myself. Thing handles anything I put through it with no problem. Recoil is barely noticeable. Built like a tank. Wouldn't trade it for anything. Also have a SP101. Now that thing stings with full house loads.

Gun control means hitting your target!!!

Sold a Taurus 669 and got a Ruger GP-161 recently. It shoots very well. I was thinking of getting the stainless one, but the blue model looked awesome on that gun.

Mine shoots just about anything well, but really loves a 125 grain Golden Sabre JHP over 18.5 grains of W296 powder (about 1800fps).

My advice - get one today!

I killed my first deer with a GP-100. They say a 357 is too light for deer. I hit mine in the chest. The bullet blew a big hole inside and broke the shoulder going out. Too light for deer my arse. I have been shooting GP-100s for years they are SUPERB guns.

I think the GP is best with a 4" tube, but the six-inch will reduce felt recoil, and may give you some velocity increase.

For a long .357 I go to my 7.5" Redhawk. Now that is one stupid gun! Weeeee!

"All my ammo is factory ammo"

Dogger, I have the exact model described above by RWK and echo his sentiments exactly. Have you looked at the 4" and 6" models side-by-side? If the expression "all purpose" is part of your needs assessment, go for the four incher. The six is, relatively, quite a bit more cumbersome.

Thanks for the many posts. Both the 4 inch and 6 inchers have their merits... for many years I was smitten by the 4 inch full underlug... but that 6 inch with short underlug really caught my eye in the Ruger brochure. Have not seen one "in person" yet! Bummer!
