Any Advice On Fitting Custom Revolver Grips?

I ordered a pair of walnut blanks but I can't decide what color to stain them.

I might just leave them the natural walnut color and use a Danish Oil to protect the wood. In any case I want a satin finish; not a glossy one like the original grips have.

If I color them, I might try to achieve the color of rosewood like the Eagle Grips on these Smith and Wesson revolvers.

Minwax Rose Wood (Water Based Stain)

Does anyone have any experience with water based stains? I'm planning to finish with a Danish Oil or Tung Oil after staining.

Any advice on techniques for fitting the grips to the frame?

Thanks.

some advise for you

First off welcome to the forum.

I would use the existing grips to cut out the new ones. Make sure the inside matches the inside of the existing grips. With that done, I would make the outside fit your hand the way youwant it to.

As far as staining the wood, I wouldn't myself, but that is completely up to you. I would opt to use some black dye in some acraglass to fill the pores and then sand that down to bare wood and then would use Arrow's wood Finish to finish the grips out. Using 300 grit paper on the first coat to dewhisker the grips and then move onto 400 grit paper for the rest of the coats. This will yield a very matte finish that is weather proof as well and looks very good. Good luck with it.

To me, that revolver would look "right" with oil finished walnut, like the original military guns. Just MHO, though.
