Any 10mm Witness authorities?

I need to replace the recoil springs (yes, plural) in my compact 10mm Witness. I have called and e-mailed EAA customer service several times and can't get a straight answer as to whether the .40 caliber springs are the same size and strength as the 10mm or what the factory spring power is supposed to be. Also, they seem to be oblivious to the fact that the gun has dual recoil springs. I shoot the crap out of my Witness and need new springs. Can anyone help with info on this gun?

Darn, too late...

When I first read the title, I thought you were going to be asking a "should I buy question"... Then I read your post about a problem AFTER purchase. All I can offer now is: GOOD LUCK. Before, I would have recommended BUYER BEWARE.

If you do a search on TFL you'll find EAA has mixed reviews, and some posters (like me) have had lousy experiences with EAA. However, in response to your question about springs, maybe Wolff can offer sum assistance. Check out this site: http://www.gunsprings.com/1ndex.html

Logansdad,

I replaced the recoil spring of my compact Witness 10mm with the highest-rated wolf spring for the compact witness series. I believe it was listed for the .40, but it worked fine, providing more consistent ejection (with the stock spring, my empties would sometimes fly about 25 ft away directly to my right!). The only drawback was that the slide took a fair amount of muscle to rack.
Hope this helps.

Shawn

I love my Witness....

It is trouble free, except that I'm worried about spring life.

Shawn, did you replace only the large spring, or does Wolff offer both springs as a kit? Also, did you replace the firing pin spring at the same time?

Witness Springs

I received a catalog about 7 months ago from Wolff listing their springs after purchasing several different level kits for my Witness .45. Unfortunately I tossed it due to the availability of their website, e-mail and telephone for merchandise perusal and questioning. At that time they appeared to have a spring whatever your Witness need (i.e., higher or lower; any caliber).

I ordered and received the recoil and firing pin spring kit in 14#, 16# and 18#. The 14# was the factory rating and ejected them about 20 feet to the right flank. At 18# they sometimes dribbled to my feet dependent upon my grip experimentation (no fte, though). At 16# it appeared to be just right for the .45

I have heard that for the 10mm the rating appears to work optimally around 18# due to the pressures involved in the hotter cartridge on the same .45 frame, but since many of the 10mm now are ballistically the same as the .40 S&W, and the 10mm has the ability to be very adapatable for the manufacturer from mild to hot I would experiment with each specific type of cartridge.

But that's me.

I did call EAA technical service and they advised me that the factory spring for the compact 10mm Witness was 14#, but the Wolff site says the factory spring for the compact 9mm/40S&W models (10mm not listed at all) are 17#. According to their web site, Wolff doesn't offer a calibration pak for compact models, so you have to order each spring individually.

Also, no one seems to be able to tell me if I should replace the smaller secondary spring at the same time. EAA doesn't even list on the parts page for the steel frame Witness.

I haven't gotten there yet, but I am pretty much convinced that it is not a 17# spring.

Does your factory setup use two springs, one inside the other? Mine does, but the 9 does not (both compacts).

And yeah, I've measured 35' brass ejection on grass and sand.

EAA stinks

I would e-mail the Talifango site diretly and ask them. I've given up on EAA doing anyhting. Be sure to tell the Talifango people what a probelm dealing with EAA is. Maybe they will pick a better importer. Great gun, the worst customer service possible.

All I can say is I must have the 1 10mm witness that works right IF you feed it with the right mags. Sorry they are so spotty in quality.

My Witness eats nearly everything I feed it. I did buy 500rds of CCI Blazer TMJ that it seems to be picky about. I'll get a FTF about once every 100rds. Haven't taken the time to see if the problem is isolated to one of my three mags or occurs in all of them. It has fed every type of hollowpoint ammo I've put in it. I am plenty happy with my Witness.
