Can someone explain "what is defined as a relic/antique firearm?

Any firearm built in 1899 or before. Don't know the exact date. There is a fancy legal explanation on the BATF site.
 
Antique firearms are those manufactured in or before 1898, and replicas of those firearms, that do not use fixed ammunition or that use fixed ammunition that is no longer manufactured in the US and is not readily available in ordinary commercial channels. Curios and relics are firearms over 50 years old or that are on the BATF list of Curios and Relics.
