Anti-war man killed by Pro-war man

NEW YORK It was bound to happen sooner or later, and in what newspapers in Kentucky are calling a first, one American has killed another in a dispute over the Iraq war.

It happened at Floyd County flea market on Thursday, when two friends, who were firearms vendors there, drew guns after quarreling about the war. Douglas Moore, 65, of Martin, who backs the war, shot and killed Harold Wayne Smith, 56, of Manchester, who opposed it, according to investigators.

Moore was released without being charged after he convinced police he had acted in self-defense. A grand jury may yet hear evidence in the case.

Commonwealth's Attorney Brent Turner said the episode might mark the first death in the U.S. due to a dispute over the war.

One witness, Sam Hamman of Prestonsburg, told the Lexington Herald-Leader, "Harold was talking about the 14 people that were killed in Iraq the other day and Doug said that just as many people were killed on the highways here.”

This quickly escalated into an argument, then to a scuffle, and finally both men drew pistols outside a snack shed. The dead man was apparently just a little slower in firing. Witnesses said he stood for about five seconds before toppling on the walkway.

In a telephone interview with the Lexington paper yesterday, Moore said police had told him not to discuss his feelings about the Iraq war.

"I'm sorry this has happened," Moore, a retired railroad worker, said. "But then what's done can't be undone." Moore told the Lexington reporter he thinks Smith and his family knew him well enough "to know what my thoughts are, his family does, because me and Harold was friends. That's all I'll say."

The daughter of the dead man said the two men were friends and had discussed Iraq before. She said her father "had different opinions than everybody. He felt it was wrong that all of these young people were losing their lives over what was going on. It was just a political disagreement, like a whole lot of people have."

Not good, even more so that they were firearms vendors :(

When the anti look at us, they won't see the millions of good people, they will look at the one pro-war gun dealer who gunned down the anti-war man who was just expressing his 1st amendment right.

It'll be interesting to see how this plays out - it's usually the anti-war leftists who are the most violent, as has been discovered by ProtestWarrior.com during their confrontations with the left.

The anti war pulled his piece first, brandished it and did not fire, and the pro war, upon seeing a handgun waved in his face, killed him.

Sounds like he was justified to me..... the cops must have had a good reason (i.e. proof) in order not to arrest or charge him. If he wasnt the first one to pull a gun then it is the first guys fault for doing that.

They were friends who got a little too involved over a verbal arguement. The pro-war guy is always going to have to wonder whether his friend decided that shooting was stupid at the last second, afterall this was his friend and which was why he didn't finish the fight even though he stood there for five seconds after being shot. Plenty of time to get off a round if he really wanted to.

Living with that would suck...

Stupid fight. :(

I wonder if it was like one of those movie things where the shot guy just holds his gun and stares at the guy who shot him for like 5 seconds like hardly believing what happened but not shooting the other guy for some reason as if it was shock or something. I will never know having not been shot, but I like to think that is somone just shot me and I was conscious, I would definitely do everything in my power to bring the SOB down with me.

Two freaking idiots is what that was. Two morons. Who cares what the argument was about, with morons it doesn't matter what the subject is.

That's sad. I believe it is your duty in America to voice you opinion on matters such as this. Nobody is unpatriotic for not supporting the war. In fact I believe they are more patriotic for voicing their opinion, it's their duty. That's what our soldiers are dieing for, isn't it? Freedom! Freedom the have your own opinion. Freedom to voice that opinion. Freedom to not give a damn what anyone else thinks about YOUR opinion.

By the way I'm not a liberal and I support the war! Thats my opinion.
