anti violence initiatives

the funny thing is, the head of the NRA suggested putting armed police officers into schools for protection.

the entire democratic side went into instant lambasting citing the stupidity and cost of such an idea. but yet,

obamas grand 23 ideas includes POLICE in SCHOOLS. and that idea is lauded as the greatest thing since well, air.

No.

The plan puts more cops on the streets with no task or purpose and more school resource officers and counselors in schools to "help identify possible violent behavior".

So the plan will hire one extra cop for every 10 schools in the country and one counselor for every 150 schools in the country.

Forgive me as I've not read the entire text.
Is that what the plan actually calls for?

I skimmed through parts of it and only picked up that "additional police resources" or similar wording was used.

At one point in one of the anti crime bills, the same wording was used and instead of adding more police officers, it gave the green light for cities to use those funds to add traffic cameras, computers and in car video equipment.

I can't help but think the same thing will happen here.

The additional "school security" will be a traffic cam installed in the school zone to nab speeders....

Yes. They don't show their math but it is easy to figure out if you know the number of schools in the country.

15K cops 1K counselors/ 150K schools.

ETA: My math is little off there are only 125K schools in the US. But you get the idea.

It's very normal to see armed guards at concerts and sporting events, military posts, banks, and other places where large numbers of people congregate or there is something of value to protect. None of us think much of it. Many of these places are 'gun free zones' and only guards are armed.

Our most precious commodity is our children. We send them to schools in gun free zones. Why do we not protect them to an equal level?

Force on force is the most viable means of deterrent and if needed the best way to neutralize an undesirable event.

Consider this, also. If designed properly, a guard program can be more than just protection from bad guys. It can be an education tool - teach the kids (and teachers) how to protect themselves (NRA's Refuse to be a Victim comes to mind).
