anti jam tab

I got on a tangent on my other post and have started this one to simplify matters I hope.

OK, so the U-shaped tab on an 870 carrier is an anti jam tab. Somebody tell me why its a plus and how it functions? My older gun does not have one, my "problem gun" does!

Could it be as simple as an access to insert a shim or implement and force a round back in the mag tube in a double feed?

The tab combined with the relief bevel on the front of the bolt on guns that came with said tab allows one to rack the slide to clear a shell that was not properly inserted into the magazine tube and hence caught between the carrrier and the bolt.

The tab flexes downward slightly due to pressure from the rim of the shell as the slide is racked. Between this and the bevel on the bolt there is enough give to allow the user to rack the slide with only slightly more force than normal to clear the jam.

On older, non-flextab guns, you had to clear the jam by either slamming the butt of the stock into the ground while racking the slide or disassembling the gun. Needless to say, alot of cracked stocks resulted from the former and the later is not something you want to do in a gunfight.

Bamaranger I have seen old 870's that had a slot cut into the carrier that allowed a knife blade or key to be used to push the offending shell back into the magazine and past the shell latches to remedy the situation.

thanks.

A pry slot, sorry.........duh.

I would would not call it that but don't fell bad about asking either. To me it is a hidden cost of taking an old pawn shop 870 and making it into an HD gun.

There are people out there who will suggest you don't need the flex tab conversion for an HD gun because you can practice reloading until you don't screw up but that is like saying you can practice driving until you don't get into an accident. Some things aren't your fault but they are your problem.
